Aussies call it gridiron, and call their own version of football, football. I think. Or something like that. Dammit, I can never remember, ask Arse.
And no. Association Football, the one you all call football and we call soccer because we like ripping off defunct British slang; and the assorted varieties of rugby football, were codified at roughly the same time in the UK. American Football and Canadian Football (which are damn near identical) were codified slightly later in North America and evolved from there. I think our versions are supposed to have split off from rugby, which makes sense considering how much time the ball spends in the hand.
