After thinking about this, and discussing it, I think it's time to bring it up:

What do YOU think about the custom of offering a woman your chair (if you are a guy)?

Now, we're talking about a young, healthy, virile, perfectly-capable-of-either-standing-or-getting-her-own-chair-herself, modern woman.

We are NOT discussing whether or not to offer an older person (male/female) a chair, whether or not to offer a pregnant woman a chair, or whether or not to offer a sick person (male/female) a chair. By the way, I think you SHOULD offer those people a chair if they are uncomfortable standing up, out of sheer morality.

But back to the subject: Why should you offer a healthy woman your chair?

I've asked women this and they told me this scenario (can you believe it?):

A 'Gentleman' is supposed to offer a 'Lady' a chair.

The 'Lady' is supposed to politely refuse the chair.

That's it.

Well, here's my little logical debate:

If she is SUPPOSED TO REFUSE the chair, WHAT'S THE POINT IN OFFERING HER ONE TO BEGIN WITH?

In addition to that argument, it seems to me that a healthy woman would be embarassed by something like that.

How would one of you guys feel if you walked into a room and a random woman got up and offered you her chair? Embarassed, that's how you'd feel, at least I know I would.

I want to know what YOU think. Let's hear what everyone has to say about this topic, I especially want the female perspective.

Thanks,

WH.

All depends on the situation.
Offering your own seat in the bus.
Offering a seat in your home.

At dinner:
"Would you like a seat?"
"No thanks, I'd rather stand"
"You want to eat standing up?"
"yes"

So it doesn't always work....

If I offer a chair I expect to get something in return.

And soooo Sally got Laid,
She knows it can't wait
Cause I gave my chair up now.

Haha you really think that just because you move a chair out for a lady, that you are going to get laid? Hah, Yeah right, and if she did, just for that, then shes a slut/whore whatever you like to use, then shes obviously not worth it.. I guess that could be a test to see if a girl is worth it or not.. Genius!

It's the gentlemanly thing to do, especially if she's pregnant or elderly. This couples with holding doors open and stuff like that.

Should apply to any elderly person regardless of gender too.

I was raised old fashioned, I open the door for people, rush ahead to open the door for a girl, give my seat to a girl if all other seats are full, I help friends, and friend's parents with their chores when I am entitled to relax on their couch, I try to speak elegantly (A quality which is fading) I give a firm handshake, I almost completely keep eye contact through conversations, I use a fork even on hot-wings, I apologize often and expect others to do the same, I almost always refuse food that requires my guest to work, I drink tea, etc... Not to say I don't cuss alot or use toilet humor, or that I am better educated, just brought up like a gentleman.

EDIT: In short: I would even lay my coat down on the mud for a girl to walk by unfilthified, but I have yet to have that opportunity. This is a mix of gentlemanly upbringing, and being a sucker.

Well if I wanted to sit down and a guy was in the only available seat, if he didn't offer it to me, I would push him off and sit down. Simple.

I hate people who sit on the outside seat of a bus so that they get the whole seat to themselves, or put a bag on the other one.

Its gentlemanly thing to do same as opening doors for them and giving them your coat when its cold. Its polite to do it and shows you have manners.

I agree 100% that it is nice, polite, and gentlemanly to do that. I wonder, though, why only men have to do that. In these times of emancipation, who's to say women shouldn't be polite to men, by pulling out a chair and opening doors? Just wondering. =|

forget formalities. i don't offer where i'm sitting because it's a custom. women are like a hivemind. if the ones you like see you offering it up and being nice to a girl you have no intentions of getting with, they think "wow, he must genuinely be a nice guy". even if <girl you are not interested in> says no, throw in an "are you sure?" just for good measure to show sincerity.

here's the difference. when i offer where i'm sitting to girls i'm interested in and they say no, i insist. get up, step away. she's going to accept my offer. why? because 99% of them would rather just accept it then disrupt the mood of the room.

NEVER to same-sex friends. it adds a sense of division to the room. everyone knows your buddies, so don't only be nice to the people you came with.

but if it's a guy who you DON'T know it's a nice gesture. (see: reasons to offer a girl you are not attracted to a chair)

guys, you may not realize it, but this post is doing you a HUGE service.

so everyone, don't think of it as a gentlemanly thing to do. if you're at a party or something, it's how you look like the opposite of an anti-social withdrawn prick. adds positivity to the atmosphere.

EDIT: in fact, the best reason to do anything nice and assertive is because it'll usually help you get laid. fact.
holding the door, buying food+drinks for, offering a seat, etcetera. even if it's just the person in front of you in line and they are 1$ short for something. don't just give them a dollar, pay for the whole thing.

Or you could just buy a hooker. Saves time and probably money too.
