Reach to be Bungie's Last Halo

Developer ending work on franchise next year.

by Martin Robinson, IGN UK

UK, July 24, 2009 - Halo: Reach will be Bungie's final Halo game, with the company moving on to new projects following completion of the title next year.

Halo: Combat Evolved marked the series' debut on the first Xbox back in 2001, and since then Bungie has gone on to create one of the definitive videogame franchises with the second and third instalments of the game. Halo 3: ODST is due this September, while Halo: Reach - which goes back to the origins of the Halo story - is expected next autumn.

"After Reach that's it for us," Bungie's Lars Bakken told IGN. "We're already working on a new IP that we can't talk about yet, I don't know when we'll be talking about it - when we're ready I suppose."

Bakken was cryptic as to the nature of Bungie's next game - though suggested that it may well step away from the first person mechanics that have defined the studio's output for the past decade; "If you look at Bungie's past we've done a lot of different styles - first person to third person to RTS - so it could be anything."

Future Halo games will be overseen by the recently revealed 343 Industries, which is headed up by former Bungie employee Frank O'Connor.

It's gonna be a day of mixed emotions when Reach hits the street

Re: The Last Halo

I'd say its gonna be an even more mixed up day when people start finishing the game and discovering the final ending of the Halo franchise, eh?

Or am I supposed to be sad? :(

A little, remember first time you played Halo, remember the epic sequel(s)?

Re: The Last Halo

Only the original was good. Hell, the original was epic. But the sequels to follow were much, much less.

Re: The Last Halo

IGN rated them 9.7, 9.8 and 9.5

On anoher note, it looks like this is never gonna happen:

Halo Chronicles said:
Peter Jackson's team announced in 2006 that it would work with Bungie to co-write, co-design, and co-produce what Microsoft says is a "completely new and original chapter" in the Halo series. Exactly what that will be, however, has yet to be unveiled.

It seemed like a match made in Halo heaven. Award-winning director Peter Jackson had been tapped to produce a feature film based on the Halo universe, and he was working on an episodic Halo videogame project to boot. All that was left for gamers to do was patiently wait. Well, that was 2006, and three years later, neither the movie nor the game has a solid release date. And any hopes Jackson fans had that Microsoft would reveal the project at E3 2009 were dashed when Halo Reach was announced instead. Has the Microsoft/Jackson relationship soured? Did Gears of War steal the Hollywood spotlight from Halo? Neither side is talking, so we're calling this one comatose. Sad face.

Re: The Last Halo

Just because a game information site says it is good doesn't make it any better than it really is. Both sequels were of no comparison to the first. Halo 2 was just above average in the campaign story, and it had a good solid online, which Halo 3, in my opinion, failed to maintain. And campaign in Halo 3 is so bad it isn't worth mentioning. The whole series went downhill.

if you read the books, you may understand where i'm coming from when i say that the halo: reach storyline has the potential to be better then halo 1. imagine being able to choose from a team of differing spartan soldiers **drools**

Re: The Last Halo

Hopefully they end it with a game of epic proportions and it doesnt just go out with a mere spark as opposed to a huge bang.

Re: The Last Halo

As sgt. Johnson said,

"Send me out, with a bang"

I am :( that there will be no more Halo games but at least I now have 6 games to play.
And to qoute a spraypainting on a wall in ODST for when the Halo series is over

"Remember Reach!"

Re: The Last Halo

Could be cool if Reach was a squad based action/strategy game ala Swat,

July 24, 2009 - Earlier today, Microsoft Game Studio's Ryan Crosby told IGN that the company was, "still looking into it," in regards to the Peter Jackson Halo Chronicles episodic videogame. Crosby continued to say that the game is, "being discussed."

Apparently those discussions don't involve Peter Jackson himself.

Jackson told Joystiq that, "The Halo project is no longer happening, it sort of collapsed when the movie didn't end up happening."

If Halo Chronicles does ever materialize -- and at this point it would seem prudent not to get your hopes up -- the much ballyhooed director that was originally announced to be working on the project back in 2006 will not be a part of it.

Re: The Last Halo

I highly doubt they will discontinue making new Halo games, it's what built the Xbox. I recall them saying there were going to be no more made after 3 but look what we have now. If they do then eh.. =[

They said that Halo 3 would be Master Chiefs last adventure, which it is. ODST takes place before Master Chief join forces with UNSC in New Mombassa and Reach takes place just as Master Chief leaves the planet.

I really think Bungie is gonna stop making Halo games, from what I hear they have something entirely new in the works.

Jackson's Studio Working on New Games

Halo Chronicles' studio still operational.

by Martin Robinson, IGN UK

UK, July 28, 2009 - Wingnut Interactive, the studio set-up to produce the cancelled Halo Chronicles, is still at work on original games according to a recent interview.

Following a series of interviews at last week's Comic-Con, it emerged that Peter Jackson's Halo project is dead in the water. Jackson's manager Ken Kamins explained the cancellation to the LA Times, saying "[Microsoft Games Studios] were scaling back everything, including the number of Halo games, and it just made sense at that point. Once 'The Hobbit' and 'Tintin' got going, they really cannibalized Peter's time and ability to oversee any Halo games."

However, the cancellation doesn't mean that Jackson is done with videogames, as Kemins revealed that Wingnut Interactive is alive and well, and working on an all-new game. "It was born out of this [Halo deal]," said Kemins of the studio, "but now Peter has people in Wingnut Interactive working on original intellectual property."

Just found this

Re: The Last Halo

they might make new halos, but it always depends on the last of the series like halo 3 if it sold really well then they may be more likely to continue the series because of the sales.. so if u really dont like halo dont buy it, otherwise your contributing to halos fate.
But personally im still buying reach because its halo i may not liek it too much but i still gotta play because it is the only game that has a very good matchmaking system and co-op play with 4 players online and off not many games do taht anymore. all it needs is bots :) if a game does not have a good co-op online and off i believe it is not worth my time unless its built to be single player like assassins creed.

Re: The Last Halo

Bungies contract with microsoft is up, bungie doesn't wanna do anymore Halo games, that's why they Microsoft created a company just to maintain the halo brand.

Bungie has already got something new in the work.
