I don't know the exact amount but I know that it pretty high, around 30,000 I think.

No you don't, I only had 38,000 and I had 10 people follow me.

i think 12 is the max so 50,000 for 12 but surely lower for 10

Just keep getting people to follow you as you gather renown. Once it tells you that you have gotten the maximum amount of followers, you have enough to open the Wraithmarsh demon door.
