Okay, I KNOW that this has already been discussed, and I didn't really get any answers I needed. So what I want to know is:

Is it EVER coming back? Are you guys in control of it? Why is it gone? I really miss that thing. Seems so empty without it. And the online users thing isn't in alphabetical order anymore. Any reason why? Or is it linked to the other thing?

Having the top stats area goes towards draining the servers - the more optimized the site is, the better for everyone.

If the strain on the servers is too great, the site goes down - and with the impending release of Fable 2, Steve thought it best to get rid before the floodgates opened. As it was, the site was so popular it went down once anyway, but it would have been on a daily basis if the top stats area was still there.

It might return in future - but we can't promise anything.
