If you kill him, you will get evil points. If you give it to him you will get good points and maybe some laugh if u listen to them before going out xD I gave it to him. Now, rep like you said xD

the same thing happened to me i gave it to him, and it was still in my inventory, it sells for a good amount too.

all 3 times.... yes 3 times i gave the stone to the zombie and when i walked out of the cave i still had it... and still do have it. Also with archons dream i gave it to the archeoligest and when i walked out i still had it <- that only happend once though

every time Iv given it back, I still have it in my inventory afterwards anyway. :hmm: this doenst nessisarily happen every time though.
if your good and want to keep it, just kill them anyway. the evil points wont affect your morality enough for you to really notice. people dont seem to complain about it either. bards might, but who cares.
money isnt really a problem in fable, so there is no point in keeping it for monitary reasons. keep it if you like to collect unique items. if you dont care either way, give it back and stick around for a laugh.
another way to do it is if your already good, keep it. if your already evil, take it. on your next playthough make the other choice.

Yeah, I gave it to him... because it's not like I need the money. I never looked to see if I kept it, maybe I did.
But really, giving it back is worth it just to listen to them talking afterwards. It made ME laugh my ass off, at least.
