The tower of everlasting chaos

So, I have this kind of neat idea. I know it's hard sometimes for Mods to keep up on all the going ons of the forum. But it seems to me sometimes they get out of hand and no ones there to help. So Maybe if some members feel overwhelmed, or like something bad is about to happen. They can bring it to the attention of the Staff here, and maybe get some help.

To kick this puppy off, Last night Trevor (Kave) Sent me a message on MSN and told me I should check out this thread:

http://projectego.net/forums/threads/dlc-idea-downfall.27526/page-2#post-463838

While I like alot of the members posting in it, things seem to be getting a little bit heated. I tried to defuse the situation, but since I won't be on for a little bit, I think one of the staff members might want to take a look.

Anyway! Happy Trails! Have a good day! ^_^

It'd be wonderful if people made use of the report button, then we could get to things quickly. Thread looks okay for the time being but I'll keep an eye on it.

Yeah well, sometimes those even go un-noticed. :P Up to you though, and thanks.
You're not a staff member, how do you know they go unnoticed? Just because the staff have a difference in judgement, it doesn't mean it's been unnoticed.

However I must say when a thread like that is heated, it's not always best to try and defuse the situation because you can unintentionally make it worse. That's a staff member's job. Which is why we have the report button. It makes dealing with threads like these a lot simpler. Though it's commendable to try and solve things yourself, you're better off just reporting it (and hopefully others will do the same) and letting the staff do what they think is best. Threads like this just give the staff members more to clean up and they also put emphasis and spotlight onto rulebreakers, which is the opposite of what the site really needs.

I saw the thread before and didn't reply for the exact same reason. Yes, I am actually trying to improve my posting habits - because let's face it, I've been a horrible person in the past. For that, apologies, ProjectEgo.

I'm aware I'm not staff, but one time when I noticed 3 bots I reported each and every one of the posts and threads they started about nothing. The bot was NOT banned, and the threads were NOT closed and nothing happened...I had to post on one of the staffs profiles before anyone even noticed... . so I assumed they got a little overwhelemed with reports and differen't forum bugs they have to deal with..and thus, they went..unnoticed. I've been here for 4 years, and sometimes, threads DO go unnoticed and unreported and bad things end up happenning, the situation is blown out of proportion and people are banned for it in the end. Just trying to prevent these things from happening.

Plus, again, it's up the staff what they think. :)

Perhaps we're in need of more staff members more than we thought? I imagine there is a lot of reports to surf through, and I'm willing to bet a lot of them are bogus or "i don't agree with this guy, ban him" kind of reports that are meaningless and after a while the current staff members just give up.

Reports were very easy to follow on vBulletin but I'm not sure how it works on XenForo so maybe it's not as easy as I thought it would be to follow them. I guess moderators sometimes let things slip, and obviously having more would reduce this chance.

Not to advertise myself but I've had a lot of experience in this field before and I'd be willing to do it. Mind you, it's not much of an achievement to be able to make a just judgement. There are probably people more worthy for the post of moderator than me. Especially since I don't post much anymore. Mind you, that could also work to the sites advantage provided I did my job, which I'd try my best to.

If you're referring to when we first moved to Xenforo, then that was because the software was in it's first Beta stage and many features did not work, including the report button and the banning of troublemakers. Thus me and Tsuyu were powerless, and the Admins were often too busy fixing things. The report feature was restored but me and Tsuyu did not get our punishment abilities until much later (which was recently in fact when I brought it back up to Steve), so during that time... there wasn't much we could do.

Here's a story. I've told Angel and Gikoku about this. A couple of people at FableTLCMod used to place bets on ProjectEgo staff, who would do what to who and when. The last time this happened was right after Gikoku became a moderator here, I really thought he'd want to break in his ban hammer and set an example first thing so I bet on him to be the first to ban some blatant troll in the Fable 3 section. I even cheated a bit, reported the posts and posted on Gikoku's profile. Gikoku gave him a warning, Tsuyu came in later and banned the guy for three days, then Drakan showed up and made the ban permanent, and I completely and utterly lost my bet.

So yea it's true, staff doesn't always do as we please when we please. And sometimes they need to be nagged a bit to do something. I like the idea that if the reports aren't drawing enough attention to a powder keg prone to explode, a quick profile post will do.

There are multiple reasons for why we do not do things right then and there. Bad timing of a report where someone reports something and neither of us has hit the Refresh button for awhile, or is currently at the computer, or we don't believe that whatever was reported was necessary (e.g. someone reporting someone because they simply disagree with them).

Each member of the staff has their own judgment on a situation though we ultimately come to an agreement most of the time that the judgment that was made is acceptable.

:P Also, at that time when you messaged me on my profile, I didn't refresh my page in time because I was away doing something else for a moment, plus.. when I gave him a warning, I didn't find out about his other terribly trollsome threads/actions until afterward when Tsuyu got him.

Not really, reports on here are easy to spot (they appear at the top of the page and are hard to miss) very convenient and easy to handle than they were on vBulletin. The main issue with the reports is that people simply aren't using them when they should. Just right now, someone reported a spambot and I cleaned it up and banned it... but this was the first Report of December, the last one was in November after Thanksgiving. I don't know why people aren't using it, maybe they haven't noticed, maybe they're afraid to use it, ,maybe they don't know how, maybe they don't feel like using it, or perhaps they feel like taking matters into their own hands... I don't know.

But I really wish people would use them a lot more, would help get things done much quicker. Honestly I wouldn't mind another member or members to the team, but that's ultimately up to the Admins themselves.

The vigilantes are among us. :P

Seriously though, that's alarmingly low for a number of reports. That's almost scary. The forum I was an administrator for had like 3-5 reports a day, 40% at least were legit ones.

@JohnDoe: Not sure why you deleted your post, but by any means with the exception of making a thread on it to report someone is fine enough. :P

And yes, I do wish that day had went differently.

Indeed they are. We received frequent reports when we were at vBulletin, shame that it's the opposite now.

Cant believe you didnt bet on me John, shame on you. Yeah like Scott said we had some issues with the report feature and Mod powers when we first switched to Xenforo but its sorted now. We do seem to have less reported posts than we used to now though however spambots are MUCH easier to deal with on Xenforo and one button can ban them and remove all their posts. We cant miss the reports anymore (only way we saw them on vB was in emails) so if anyone sees anything then dont hesitate to report it. If Trevor was to have messaged staff then it would have been looked into as if things arent reported then its hard to spot them. Having not played Fable III yet i dont check that section much UNLESS something is reported.

I'm slightly proud of having reported some bots. xD
And I do look out for what to report. I'm also back in the F3 section as of recently. The hard part, though, is to decide of it's worthy reporting. I might find something too harsh, but maybe it isn't and I saw it wrong. If I would report that, the staff would only get unnece-blabla thingy, uhm.... Reports that are not needed. Also, If I think something is worth reporting, I don't know if somebody else has done it. But apparently, the Report function isn't used enough anyway, so'll hesitate less to use it. Still though, it's so subjective whether something is permitted or not. I like to help the site, but if I would be a 'vigilante', I need to have a correct sense of judgement...
