A policy banning open homosexuality in the US military has been repealed after nearly two decades.
The dropping of "don't ask, don't tell" means service members can now reveal they are gay without fear of investigation or discharge.
"Repeal Day" parties have been organised across the country to mark the victory for gay rights.
The US Congress voted last year to repeal the law, which was introduced in 1993 under the Clinton administration.
Under the policy, gays were permitted to serve as long as they did not openly acknowledge their sexual orientation, while commanders were not allowed to ask.

This was a long time coming, a little late if you ask me. Glad they finally got it together and did away with that stupid rule. Of course, now the only problem will be dealing with soldiers like
this guy (user: BufordP and Warning: VERY offensive).

Anyone saying it will hurt the military's efficiency or effectiveness clearly has never read a real history book (the bible isn't history, it's a story) and is instead gripped by a paralyzing fear, induced by religion. Some of the strongest militaries in the past have allowed LGBT people to serve. Just think Rome, or maybe Sparta for instance, not to mention the other Greeks. If anything they fight even harder, as they are not just fighting as brothers in arms, but also to protect those they love who are right next to them.

Besides, DADT only kept "those evil people" at home, living so much closer to the very bigots who hate them. Way to be a bunch of fails.

My only concern is from reading that discussion page I linked in the OP. I pray there aren't any soldiers who think that leaving their gay comrades for ambushes and condemning them to death on the battlefield is any way to act. I also pray that I'm completely crazy for worrying about it in the first place.

I just take solace in the fact that homosexuality will one day be widely accepted. It's not too different from racism, slavery, and segregation, after all. There was even a controversy about whether or not to let blacks serve as Union soldiers during the Civil war, but eventually, blacks were given all the same rights as everyone else. Time is the only thing that gays need in order to achieve the same thing. Newer and more accepting generations are being brought into the world while older ones with less tolerance are dying off. It really is nothing more than a matter of time.

By the end of the civil war, roughly 179,000 soldiers of the Union army (10%) were black.

Haha, I also can't wait until the vocal intolerant people "die off," as you said. Hopefully our children will grow up in a better world than it currently is.

Every day I had hopes for this with our younger generation, but then I signed onto Xbox Live..

The anonymity of the internet causes people to say and do things like spew racist and homophobic garbage just to be amused by the reactions of others. I really don't feel like that has much connection to the level of tolerance in our society.

I wasn't being serious, I know the lot of them are trolls. Chunks of today's youth however are not as intelligent as they could be, yeah the oldies can die off with their homophobic upbringings, but there's not a lot stopping them from still passing down their moronic views to their children.

Well, there has to be something keeping their views from infesting the minds of younger people, because it's very obvious to me that younger generations don't hold those same values.

Common sense and the ability to think for oneself, some however are unfortunately unable to perform such a feat. I don't see how one could believe all of today's youth is completely open-minded.

Just when you think that the newer generation learn to think for themselves and not take what their parents told them for granted, they are already taught that their parents are always right, and as such don't 'have to' think for themselves.

Dude, my mum told me the people in the T.V could see and hear me, safe to say she's insane and never right. So I've learned to think for myself from a very early age, like let's say, 5 years old. Thank you insane mother.

EDIT: IMO, I think she was just trolling me. Crafty woman.

Well sure, but when I said this:

Well, there has to be something keeping their views from infesting the minds of younger people

I was mostly talking about what would trigger a rise in more logical and individual thinking.

I don't see how one could believe all of today's youth is completely open-minded.

Well obviously that would be a ridiculous notion. I mainly speaking about younger generations in general.

I'm not so sure that's the case. I have met very few people who hold the exact same values and belief systems as their parents.
