Use Money instead of Points on Xbox

Microsoft have announced that they will be dropping the points system on Xbox Live for real currency after the next Xbox 360 system update, when you next choose to initiate a purchase or redeem a Points card or code with your Microsoft account.​

Now, can you still only add certain amounts to your account like usual? Or if something just costs $6 (for example), can you just pay the $6 rather than putting $10 into your account and having the other $4 just sit there?
