Well, back on topic...

What exactly does the December 21, 2012 apocalypse myth entail? Is it destruction of the whole planet, or just the death of all humans? If it's the destruction of the planet, then no. Let's steer clear of that. If it's the death of all humans though...well...I do believe that the planet would be better off without human life. Do what you will with that comment.

I was talking to a hippie last night about this strangely enough. Apparently some theory out there claims that part of the Mayan apocalypse is 12 crystal skulls being found and being brought together by fate. That's supposed to happen by December 21, 2012, and when it does it'll be the catalyst for some other ****.

The scariest part about all of it is that there are still people out there who believe in this stuff. People who were around for Y2K and are still convinced that the end is constantly upon us. We've had holy books predicting rapture since 100 AD or so. There've been cults springing up claiming to know the big secret that no one else does for the last several hundred years. How can someone, with all that knowledge, let the thought into their head that says "well, maybe this time it's real!"

Let's face it. The world could end from an ancient civilization just as easily as it could from you ignoring a viral email.
You know, the ones that say "forward this to 5 people or all life on earth will cease to exist."

No. I like the world. I don't want it to end. It's not perfect, but it would be boring if it was. Some astronomically minuscule level of probability gave us this planet, had life come about on it, and had that life result in all of us. Why would anyone want to just have a button pushed and have it all come to nothing? I don't get it. I will say this, though. The world will end in several billion years for one reason or another. Some evolved version of our species will be around to deal with it. Until that day comes, we'll all just have to settle for being grateful that we're here in the first place.

It's multiple theories (none of which can be proven), but basically the end times.

The planet can be just fine with humans if we didn't spread so much and had some much needed discipline. Lots of fleshy viruses, but total extinction wouldn't be necessary.

My phone only has dates until 31.12.2098
This must mean it's the end of the world then - ah man, what a bummer, I wanted to see the next century.

And I discovered something even more groundbreaking. The dates start with 01.01.1971 x_x
Everything before that was a lie.

The gist of it is that the Mayan calendar ends at that point in time.

My theory?

They ran out of space on their circular calendar.
They figured that people in that future could have a better calendar. I bet they are laughing their ass in the afterlife with all our silly theories of world end.

If 2012 does bring worldly destruction and chaos then I'd prefer to perish during it (hopefully quickly,) I don't want to live in a world where rape, murder and general lawlessness are the norm, f**k that dude.

Sure post apocalyptic games/films are fun, but in real life there'd be nothing but pain and miserey, The ones who die are the lucky ones, the struggles over for them. Disaster brings out the worst in people, nothing fun or awesome about that.

Worry not. My hokuto shinken will protect you!

To be honest I wouldn't even ask a Mayan where his own nose was, they liked to throw their sacrifices bodies into their own water sources, poisoning them from what I hear, as well as playing football with severed heads, among other backward practices. So I don't understand why people call them wise, they sound like a bunch of idiots to me. No wonder they died out.

The Mayans didn't count leap years/leap days into their calender. According to them - the world should have ended 7 months ago.
Yup, because their calendar consisted of different cycles from our own. The notorious 2012 just marks an end to a cycle, which isn't a tragedy, but something to celebrate about. It's like our New Year.

Edit: MMM post

would be pretty much screwed irregardless of sterility.

Those two statements seem rather conflicting. Have you seen the original Road Warrior? It is pretty much just that: rape (lots of it), murder and general lawlessness.
