Nah, it's actually a lot like English. A lot more similar than, let's say, French and English.

Something about my ancestors running about pillaging your churches and villager for a while, then settling down alongside yours, I'd wager.

Swedish complicated allright. Sounds pretty much like latin in unused ears.

Re: What language?

French, Spanish and Italian I can work out most of the time thanks to the links to Latin...Latin isn't too bad so long as you sometimes think a bit outside the box...

Ok...so for example how would you say something basic like: my name is?

What you are saying is true but when it comes to "speaking" swedish it gets complicated.

I'm speaking of course about our 'hard vocals', a, o, and u, wich can be hard to pronounce. That's what my foreign fellows told me anyway.

But only the way it sounds. Grammatically it's nearly identical to English.

Re: What language?

Like "My name is" or "What's you name" ?
^ ^
Mitt namn är. Vad är ditt namn?

Something like that! :)

What is your name? Vad är ditt namn?

Identical.

Re: What language?

See that I can see the similarities in straight away :)

If I have the English translation to compare a phrase to I can sometimes get the gist of it...but dump a sentence on me without any English help and I'm screwed

Check my previous post. I think we are talking about two separate things here, there's a big difference between writing/reading and speaking swedish.

Re: What language?

Angel, can you speak.. Emm.. Emm.. Fable'ish (The Old Kingdom one)?

? :DDD

Re: What language?

What do you mean by Fable'ish? :)

Re: What language?

The Old Kingdom language, that one the guildmaster speaks to open a door for you through the guildseal. :S
