What sells games?

I've always wondered , what sells games? No I don't mean the shops:), but what do you think as a member of projectego.net:) sells games.

I think we can have some interesting answers, go on make a statement

 Don't hesitate to disagree with some of the members though

Re: What sells games?

Gameplay. Graphics i guess lol. Storyline.

Re: What sells games?

Violence. Not to me specifically, but violent games sell better than most other games. Sports games go pretty well too.

Re: What sells games?

apparently...WW2 games. ppl just love WW2 games...im sick of them...

Re: What sells games?

Very long story mode with Co-Op, difficulty settings just right, and you have to be able to *walk around in story mode*. Do different things while still having a main objective.

* I mean like, you can go out side of places such as GTAs. Games like Def Jam ICON just let you be in your house and other places.*

Re: What sells games?

What Sells them? Well theres a ton of answers to that..

I guess Gameplay,Story,Tech (as in Like no bugs, constant 60 fps.), Trailers, Hype, Achievements :ninja:, And good ol' Fun. Whats a game Without any fun right?.. And Hyped up Fans :)

Re: What sells games?

If you want to sell your game to kids that are 12-13 years old, go for graphics.

They DONT KNOW what gameplay is, they buy the game with the best graphics!

(No offense if there are any 12-13 year olds on the forums, if you dont fit in my description, so be it :D)

That applies to any age. But most 12-13 yr olds buy the bloodiest games they can get their hands on. Or most brutal/Action Game

Meh i didn't when i was 13 :P. What sells a game in my opinion is the Graphics, The Music (Strange but yeah), A Good In Depth Long Storyline - And by that, the storyline must always make me give a crap about the actual story, Hours of Gameplay, Variation, Customization,

Another thing that sells a game for me is Co-op.

Re: What sells games?

many hours of gameplay, good graphics and an awesome storyline. it shouldnt wear down your pc though. good trailers are in there too. also id have to say that to me a cool looking box cover sells games

Re: What sells games?

Sex, drugs, and violence. That's always what I'm looking for in a game. Not necessarily in that order.

I think that the hype and marketing is super important, if no one knows , they won't by it. constant 60 frames per second don't sell games , look at GTA4 running at about 30 frames/s and we all know it will sell loads

Re: What sells games?

Well, hype and graphics are the main ones. Just look at Fable and Halo 3. The concept is definitely a selling point for me. Anything interesting or quirky, I'll go for. I originally liked the dystopia concept in games, but it's getting a bit overdone. And something like Portal (I haven't actually played it, but I considered getting it once I read about it) that let you just have fun and play around. Assassin's Creed is another one.

It is, however, definitely the little things that make a classic though. Like some of the expressions in Fable were just priceless, but they don't really get a say as to whether you buy it in the first place. Things you DON'T know about when you buy it.

Re: What sells games?

I buy certain games for many reasons, normally based around Story/Length/ and replayability. Im also a sucker for physics in games, good GFX are a bonus but i think the physics in a game are MUCH more important. The games that keep me coming back to play them either have long single player (with decent amount of replayability) or games that have co-op or good online modes for them.

Im currently playing Lost Odyssey and its story has really impressed me, its GFX are gorgeous too but thats not all that important. The game itself feels like an old style RPG that feels just like Final Fantasy series did all those years ago (im aware its created by same guy), however as dated as it feels im hooked on it because its so well done. Its the game that FFXII should have been and more.

Re: What sells games?

If I'm going to buy a game, I make sure that I will be playing it for a long time. I don't like dropping $60 on a game that I'm only going to play for a month or so.

Precisely, i love games with realistic reacting physics.

Re: What sells games?

I suppose it is different for everyone. Excessive violence, cursing and sexual content turn me right off a game - but for others it's what makes them sit up and shell out the cash...

I want to know that the money I spend on a game is worth every penny - there has to be a decent length, storyline, subplots, twists, replayability and the option to change the difficulty accordingly because there is nothing more frustrating for a crap-at-games person such as myself to get hold of a title only to consistently die within the first fifteen minutes thanks to not being able to adjust the settings according to ability.

That's what ticks me off about COD4 - I'm doing recruit level, obviously, and it states that it is aimed at those who are new to FPS games or are casual gamers. Yet I have consistently found one area near the start to be a source of endless frustration and shudder to think what it is like on a normal difficulty level. If that's meant to be someone's first introduction to FPS games, I personally would find it very off-putting. I understand the need for realism but for people like me you just want to be able to play it through without spending hours trying not to die within seconds of the screen loading. That sort of realism is something which I'd prefer was suspended unless you up your level. If you are going in as a beginner then it would be nice if you were treated as such... otherwise, why give the option at all?

Graphics have to be good too - as do the physics. It's not acceptable, I think, for games to be coming out for next-gen consoles without the appropriate physics engine in place. If others manage it, then so should all.

I also like the opportunity to fully explore my environment without having to necessarily follow a specific plot...

The Music (Strange but yeah).

Yep, the music HAS to be GOOD. If not, I have to turn the volume all the way down. Then put on CDs and radio in the background. Strange, every time I listen to a song that I hate while playing video games, I usually mess up. When I listen to one of my favorite songs while playing video games, I usally do better. I ran a test on myself and some of my friends and it's really true!
