What should I do?

More PC problems from your favorite pal TJ! Except this time its my brothers computer. I love my laptop, its just the crappy graphics card that keeps causing me greif. But thats hardly worth getting a new PC over.

But, my brothers PC on the other hand blows. I got some of the info off it but it was a bit goofy, Im not used to his pc and I dont like his setup. first of all hes got no mousepad.... anyway, heres what I scribbled onto a sticky note. If you want any other info just tell me and I will get it. His PC is a desktop by the way.

operating sytem is Windows 2000.
Intel (R) Pentium (R) CPU 1.60GHz
AT/AT Compatible
261,424KB RAM

(I dont really know what most of that means, but Iv got a hunch that is sucks.)

So, should we get it fixed/upgraded or just get a new one?

First of all his disc tray doesnt work. Im not sure if it doesnt open or just doesnt read, anyway it doesnt work. Its also rather slow, especialy on the internet. My computer is mutch faster and its on the same conection. The computer used to belong to my dad (who we almost never see and is computer illiterate) so I imagine its got plenty of junk files and all that garbage. Also wether we fix it or replace it, I insist it be able to handle the games I bought that my computer cant play (aka, has a kick ass graphics card among other things). thats only fair right? yes I will be kicking him off alot to play fallout 3, but hey he can go use my computer (he already refused to trade though, doesnt like laptops :( )

Anyway I think Im starting to ramble, so whats the smarter move, fix or replace?

Re: What should I do?

CPU and RAM are really bad compared to what you can get for cheap now, and if the disc tray won't even open, I'd say just abandon that paperweight and get a new one.

If you want to game, just get a desktop, you'll be much happier with one.

Not really. If you want portable gaming, get a lap top. If you have enough, a higher end one like Alienware.

Re: What should I do?

Well if it truly sucks then you should just buy a new one, but if you buy a new one i would try and make sure that you keep it clear and organised and virus free.

So yeah. Or you could just update your computer but i would surgest getting a whole new computer.

Well I never said portable gaming, and the fact is desktops will always be further along then laptops.

Re: What should I do?

Yeah, Iv looked into updating my laptop and its just not worth it. And like I said befor, its great for everything but gameing. I got it about a year ago and I have yet to need to move it. So portability is not a priority. I might need it for school later, but I surely dont need another one. my next PC will surely be a desktop. but this is my first computer and Iv learned alot but I wont be getting a new one until Iv taken a few classes and know what the hell Im doing.

And this is my brothers computer we are talking about. Its crap and I just wanted to know if we should update it or get a new one. Looks like a new one is the way to go. I wont be getting a new computer for a while, so in the meantime I will be kicking my bro off his for all my gameing needs.

Re: What should I do?

Yeah, get a new one, decent ones don`t cost so much. The current PC is not worth upgrading because if you want a new (yeah, you can upgrade to a "newer" CPU that fits to your current mobo socket, but I bet even the best one is too bad) CPU, your mobo won`t support it, then you have to add a decent graphics card (depends if you have PCI, AGP or PCI-E slot) and most likely a new PSU - that basically means a whole new computer.

Re: What should I do?

ok, now that thats settled, does anyone have any sudjestions of what we should get? we dont really need a super awesome gameing beast, just a decent all around computer with good gameing capabilities. so what sorts of things should I look for?

Re: What should I do?

most intensive game would probably be fallout 3, I dont game mutch on PC so that would be about it. I cant think of any intensive programs we use though. and I dont know mutch about disc space so I have no Idea what we need. Il check what my computer has and edit this post though.

but what I really need to know are what are some good manufacturers to go with, whats a good "average" amount of disc space to have, that sort of thing.

edit-

my computer has 2038MB RAM, and the disc drive has 117GB free of 178GB

I cant imagine him needing any more than what I have.

Some companies not to go with: Dell, HP, any brand you'd find in BestBuy or Walmart, they just overcharge for their brandname.

Average disc space, probably anything around 200 gigabytes, games and everything else just get bigger so even if you don't use it all, better to have extra then trying to make space.

My friend's gonna build me one specifically for modding fable/anything else I want.
