Yes they were too hard. Perhaps you haven't noticed, but Fable 2/3 are nothing in comparison to Fable 1 when it comes to difficulty.
 
I think maybe Lionhead have reduced the creatures because they have been extinct. Think about it... Species become extinct.... Fable II saw 500 years of killing monsters after Fable I... Fable III saw the industrial revolution and Reaver (again)... Logan would have eliminated creatures habitats to make space for his factories and such... However, Aurora... That was just a waste land. Either they're planning DLC or they just wasted land. But yeah Aurora should have had tons of monsters, especially darkness and shadows. Considering the Crawler destroyed them...

but now you don't even get the chance to enjoy the fight it's just bang.... crumple.... die..... I want my monsters to fight back! (I do not want every monster to be a repeat of Lucien)

Nice! :D I just got it an installed it again today too! Fable III just whetted my appetite for all things Fable. Time to go back to where it all began and satisfy it.
 
Actually truth be told, i'm in Dragon age mode right now. I never actually finished it, but after beating Fable III on my evil play-through, i was like "well that basically sucked, i need to do something else, oh hey I never beat Dragon age!"
