Would You Take Advice From Your Future Self?

Say you won $/£100,000,000, completely legal, off a gameshow or something (it's not important where). Then, suddenly, a bright flash of light appears and a guy who looks exactly like you appears, holding some weird remote control-like gizmo, and they have a bucket on their head (bucket not important).

They say they're you from the future, and you shouldn't take the money or it'll ruin your life.

Do you take the money?

Personally I wouldn't, because Future Me wouldn't try to scew with... himself. I'd believe him more than anyone else.

Re: Would You Take Advice From Your Future Self?

Well.. Obviously you wouldn't. If you tell yourself that it'll ruin your life, you're obviously going to believe... Yourself.

Re: Would You Take Advice From Your Future Self?

It can't be that bad, considering they got their hands on a TIME TRAVEL DEVICE. Just go time surfing a live it up.

But I chose no, considering that choosing yes would create a paradox, violating causality and destroying the universe.

Re: Would You Take Advice From Your Future Self?

Just because you get the money doesn't mean you get the Time Machine.

For example, it could arrive in the post one day, and you recognise at what your future self had. So, you go back in time, warn yourself not to take the money (not actually knowing how it'd ruin your life, which is why it's a vague warning) and then going back and put the Time Machine in the post to be sent to yourself.

Re: Would You Take Advice From Your Future Self?

Have you seen the South Park episode My Future Self N Me? I actually wouldn't listen to him, what's to say he really is you from the future? He could be someone you don't like from the future coming back in time to ruin your life. Aha!

Re: Would You Take Advice From Your Future Self?

Have you seen Bill and Teds' Excellent Adventure?

Re: Would You Take Advice From Your Future Self?

I wouldn't listen because I believe (like for 95%, so not totally sure) that time is fixed, and won't even be able of a paradox. The way I see it, whether you will, or you won't listen to your future self, you WILL end up with the money, because it is bound to happen. (Your future self proves it). If you were able to not have the money, then in the future, you wouldn't have a reason to go back in time, so you will still get the money. (I believe this is what Arseface was aiming at.)
(This also means that you future self also had a visit from the future, and still took the money...

So, in my eyes, you still take the money, therefor I voted ''no''.

PS: First post in another form than that of Fable 3 discussions. XD

Re: Would You Take Advice From Your Future Self?

As I said before, you don't have to get the money to recieve a visit from your future self. Say the Time Machine arrives in the post one day, and you recognise at what your future self had. So, you go back in time, warn yourself not to take the money (not actually knowing how it'd ruin your life, which is why it's a vague warning) and then going back and put the Time Machine in the post to be sent to yourself.

Ehh, so even if I don't take the money, I will eventually go back in time to warn myself to not take the money, because it'd ruin my life. However, I only learned that because my future self had his life ruined. I didn't take the money, so my life is good. That means I will tell myself to not take the money, over and over again, so that I have a good life.
So, then I will listen to my future self, and won't take the money.

So, paradoxes are possible after all, in this situation. Since ''past'' future-me's did take the money, and had their life ruined, but all of a sudden, I keep convincing myself not to take the money, and have good lives...

XD This is almost mind-boggling...

Re: Would You Take Advice From Your Future Self?

That's Time Travel for you. Also, have you noticed the Time Machine was never actually created? It just arrived in the post... as you posted it to yourself earlier :D

Re: Would You Take Advice From Your Future Self?

I'd ask for details.

Re: Would You Take Advice From Your Future Self?

As I previously explained, he may not be able to give them because you did as he said, so he doesn't know what happens.

Re: Would You Take Advice From Your Future Self?

I'd ask for the money to be given to various charities.

Wow... That totally replaced the philosophy of time-travel, paradox-philosophy and what choice I'd take, by me getting a Time Machine NO MATTER WHAT. Even If my life would be ruined, I could do pretty much anything I want, from then on. ^^
Well, not completely. Time travel as an ability of your own being would be better, in that case. But still, who cares what happens to them, if you know you're going to get a Time Machine? XD
Well, yeah, I'd worry about some things too...

Re: Would You Take Advice From Your Future Self?

I wouldn't take it. If there is anyone I trust, it is me. . .
But then again, if Hyperspace theory and various other theoretical time-travel theories are correct, then that is technically not "me", it's another version of me from an infintesimally different universe.
So who knows. Maybe what happened to him in his timeline was the result of a small decision. And that small decision could be what seperates our universes in the first place.

Re: Would You Take Advice From Your Future Self?

I would take it. I don't trust my future self. Seriously. I'd jank his time-remote then go time surfing.

Re: Would You Take Advice From Your Future Self?

You might not be forced to take the money at some point in your life. Who's to say that your future self isn't from a completely different timeline or dimension? Your own timeline could be completely susceptible to change without altering your future self's timeline. Surely someone has to remember Trunks' mistake from the android saga in DBZ.

Re: Would You Take Advice From Your Future Self?

Technically, you can not change the outcome of the past by visiting it, so the whole situation is impossible.

How does he know it'll ruin my life, then? If he knew that, he would have to know what caused my life to go to ruin.

He only knows it'll ruin his life because he was once you, and got visited by his future self who told him so.
