I'm not a naturalist or nudist or anything, but the human body is a sexy thing and I believe there's absolutely nothing wrong with nakedness.
It is not shameful, nor sinful.
Animals are cool with nakedness. So were we, until religion got a hold of us as a species.

Clothes to warm our bodies and other practical reasons. It wasn't until religion came along we started to wear clothes to cover our sinful and shameful nakedness.

Fair enough. However, you can't really go into that without touching on religion since that's were most of the opposition comes from...
I got asked to do life drawing once in college by my graphics teacher, we'd have volunteers come in and pose. I didn't participate though because it didn't feel relevant to my course in any way given that mine was based on creating advertisements, mock propaganda etc. That and I didn't feel like drawing nude people, mainly for the fact I was afraid of screwing up and offending the poser.
Got nothing against nude drawing, it's real art with a classical touch around since ancient times (Think Roman statues/fresco paintings) and I admire a lot of the pieces I have seen. What I like about these kinds of paintings/sculptures is that the people in them have realistic ordinary bodies, not like the skinny idealised body features that the fashion Industry forces on society. It's refreshing, it makes you realise how relative beauty is. Drawing it though just isn't my thing, I'm too socially awkward. Maybe if the opportunity presented itself I'd take the plunge and give it a go but my feelings are mixed.

Have to say I'm indifferent on the subject. Makes me feel pretty two-dimensional to say it, but the artistic value would be wasted on me. I'd want to look at nude art for the same shallow reason that I would have any desire to make it. I don't think I need to spell out what that reason is.
I'm not denying that there is artistic value to it. To all the people in the world that want to make that art or marvel at it, power to them. Anyone who dismisses serious nude art as pornography doesn't have a firm grasp on the definition of obscenity. I would also like to point out that just because I'm only capable of appreciating it on a pornographic level, does not mean that I'm calling it porn. FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION AND I GET TO SEE NAKED PEOPLE WOOOOOOOOOOO
I'm not denying that there is artistic value to it. To all the people in the world that want to make that art or marvel at it, power to them. Anyone who dismisses serious nude art as pornography doesn't have a firm grasp on the definition of obscenity. I would also like to point out that just because I'm only capable of appreciating it on a pornographic level, does not mean that I'm calling it porn. I likes simple forms of art, I generally dont like the "New age" art.. But, The human body is nice, and better naked, so why not?
But for me, its just a human body, whether its been painted, drawn, raddy raddy ra, its not that magnificent as far as art goes. (For me)
But Im not an artsy person, so my opinion towards art doesnt really matter, at all..

I'm pretty much indifferent.
When we had to draw nude models at art Uni it was because there's no other way to learn how to properly draw a human being. You don't draw flesh if you don't know the bones; you don't draw the skin if you don't know muscles; and you don't draw clothes if you don't know how the body underneath it functions. Yes, we learned all that, it was called Anatomical Drawing.
I don't really think there is a philosophical reasoning behind using nude models, outside from the aspect of purity. Of course there's a meaning if the nudity is an important and central theme to a piece. It can be a statement the same way if the model is wearing jeans or a 1000$ Nike hoodie. It's simply one of many ways to give your work some character.
As far as your friend goes, I think he has just found something he likes - the human body. Some people like trees, others like still life, he likes the human body.

Lets us all be skyclad and commence to dance under the heavenly night stars around our bonfire while having great orgies with each other, while eating sumptuous feasts and drawing each other's lewdness onto cavewalls. Let us defecate where we please and urinate in the river stream where we wash our hair.
