2 Hours of Gaming = 1 Line of Cocaine

Have you just been gaming for the past two hours? You just did the equivalent of a line of cocaine, says UK counselor and therapist Steve Pope in the Lancashire Evening Post.

The title of the piece is "Gaming Addiction Grips Youngsters" and is about the horrors of being addicted to video games.

"A lot of young people get themselves into a situation where they use video games as an escape from the world and they get hooked on the release of adrenaline it gives," says Pope. "Spending two hours on a game station is equivalent to taking a line of cocaine in the high it produces."

Pope goes on to claim that gaming is the "fastest growing addiction" in the UK and is affecting youth mentally as well as causing problems like obesity.

"I saw one 14-year-old Preston boy who played on games for 24 hours non stop and had not eaten and was showing signs of dehydration," he adds. "When his parents tried to take his console away, he became aggressive and threatened to jump out of a window."

There are also children, he warns, that have been stealing from their parents to buy video games. Just imagine if they were actually doing coke!

"Computer game addiction can also spiral into violence as after playing violent games, they may turn their fantasy games into reality," says Pope. "But it is not just children who are suffering — a growing number of adults are addicted to the Internet and to sites like Facebook."

I haven't seen so much fail in an article since Jack Thompson was running around. Unbelievable.

Crikey. Well, err...what does that make me? According to my Call of Duty 4 stats, I've clocked in at around 10 days total playtime.

That make me a crack-head?

Re: 2 Hours of Gaming = 1 Line of Cocaine

Its down to parenting not addiction, anything can become addictive if your allowed to do it none stop. Read an article the other day about a child who was hooked on smoking at 2 years old and that overweight he couldnt run around. All because he was overfed and his dad (for some insane reason) let him try a cigarette at 2 years old. When asked if it could get him to quit his father simply replied 'Why? He looks perfectly healthy to me and if i take them off him he gets really aggressive and cries and hits his head on things.' So what? He would rather risk killing his child than letting him cry a little until cravings subside.

Although that story has nothing to do with this article its entirely the same idea as to why some children act the same way when someone tries to take away their games.

I agree - addictions can take the place of anything, so saying that something is addictive is stupid. You could say that anything you enjoy is addictive because you want to do it...that's not addiction, that's enjoyment.

I do understand there should be some moderation, but 2 hours? I've played much longer than that before...

Re: 2 Hours of Gaming = 1 Line of Cocaine

The whole article is incredibly foolish, video games do not cause obesity and neither does laziness. Obesity is caused by bad diets and various diseases. Those who are addicted to the many things on the internet simply need to learn self-discipline or supply themselves with multiple hobbies. There was an article reporting of two parents who neglected their baby because they were too busy raising a virtual child on the computer, their baby eventually died.

Video Games are not to blame for these "addictions", the people themselves and their parents are to blame for their lack of self-discipline.

Re: 2 Hours of Gaming = 1 Line of Cocaine

Why play for 30 hours to complete Final Fantasy 13 when I could just snort 15 lines of coke!?
I've been missing out on potential free time all these years!

Thank you article for suggesting that I quit video games for cocaine.

Re: 2 Hours of Gaming = 1 Line of Cocaine

this is what happens when someone puts aside their profession and uses it to further their petty opinion.

what does being a therapist have to do with any of what he's saying?

there was also a lawyer in Australia i seem to recall who used his profession to further his campaign against violence in video games. if he worked on an assembly line than no one would give 2 ****s what he thought, but just because he studied in a respected field he gets cover from the press.

un ****ing believable.

Re: 2 Hours of Gaming = 1 Line of Cocaine

Alrighty then. (25x24)/2=300??????

Whoa, I'm bad at math, so did I do that right? I've played CoD4 for 25 days (don't laugh, I'll kill you).

Well, If I'm right, I've done AT LEAST 300 lines of coke. Should I switch pasttimes?

Re: 2 Hours of Gaming = 1 Line of Cocaine

I just threw up in my mouth.

How do video games cause obesity? My friend does nothing but play video games, no exercise and he's skinny as a fry. It's all about diets and how people eat, not video games. As for the stealing and jumping out the window, it's probably bad parenting that got him there. The parents probably weren't around him long enough to tell him that stealing is bad. These people are obviously not intelligent because video games can be addicting but nothing compared to cocaine.

Re: 2 Hours of Gaming = 1 Line of Cocaine

Lets have a test. One guy is going to play a game for 2 hours nonstop, and another is going to snort a line of coke. See the differences, then lawl ourselves to sleep.

Re: 2 Hours of Gaming = 1 Line of Cocaine

I just lol'd when I read Lancashire - like Lancashire is the last word in psychology

and I love how absolutely nothing is substantiated in that article - I'd like to see evidence of his test group, please. The crack-heads and the gamers...wire them up and watch them go...

Re: 2 Hours of Gaming = 1 Line of Cocaine

I remember seeing on TV when I was a kid, some guy was trying to ban violent video games and he said "I don't want my five year old daughter, playing a video game where she's chopping people's heads off."

1. Don't buy the game.
2. She's five.
3. I don't think a five year old girl would be playing games like that. If she is, you suck as a parent.

He was using the most ridiculous excuses. Just like this.

I know what Mary Jane is... But the rest is a riddle.

I must be a total junkie. By now, I would have moved onto heroin.

no, because doing a line of coke clocks in 2 hours and therefore does wonders for your gamerscore! :D
