yeah thanks for using my 1st post, strange only this thread I needed approval.
I did some more searching on the net and from what I found out, a guy even proved it on youtube is that fable original the trading trick wont work but will work on TLC. Of course if you sell stock to a trader in a town, eg. selling perfume to bowerstone south guy he will keep the stock all game (unless you buy back at loss), so to get round this sell the gifts for profit to wondering traders. One of them will buy most of the gems and will have 0 stock when you meet him. (resets when he leaves screen back to 0).
I am guessing the most efficient way without the trading trick is to probably buy every house in a town so when you sleep 6 times you can then run round the entire town getting loads of rent instead of just for 1 house. The house in bowerstone south only gives about 600 rent, oakvale 2400 and in the rainy place (sorry forgot name I think knothole glade) it gives a little bit more than oakvale. I am guessing houses in bowerstone north are the most lucrative. I love this game probably the first game of this type that I really like since legend of zelda on snes over 10 years ago.
