Huh? Are you sure about that? Isn't that a privateer?

EDIT: Huh. Wikipedia says so. I've never had that association, though. Maybe because I only ever saw it in... special circumstances. Like the Lord of the Rings, and referring to the Barbary states. I think that in English it's more generic "pirate" than anything else. [shrug] Damn Francophones, confusing me lingo.

Privateer and Corsair are synonyms, if I'm not mistaken. Pirate's are the bandits of the sea, but they become privateers (or corsairs, depending on who you're trying to impress) when the government decides that their own navy isn't enough.
