BBC Dissects Microsoft's 'Magic Wand' Patent

Written Tuesday, May 19, 2009 by Dan Webb

The rumour mill is as hot this year as it ever has been. E3 is literally only two weeks away and everyone's red hot prediction seems to involve the announcement of Microsoft's very own motion controller. The good ol' BBC have taken that one step further and analysed Microsoft's patent for the "magic wand" that dates back to 2007.

rawles why cant people just come up with their own ideas. There is no piont to it if every console does the same thing with a diff name.

Did anyone just hear the Wii choke to death on its own vomit?

Re: BBC Dissects Microsoft's 'Magic Wand' Patent

What else is there to do? The xbox wand will be completely different to the wii mote anyway, if the rumours are even true.

There comes a point when there isnt anything new to do, or at least within the technology we have right now. The only thing to do is to compete for the best of whatever product. In this case it's a motion sensing controller.

Yeah, this.

Triggers were an idea that companies took off earlier consoles, so were analog sticks and rumble features so nothing new to see another idea tried by another company. I think its interesting to see what each company does with the same idea.

The wii is dead, if 360 scavenge off it so i get the best of both worlds then I'm happy. Sorry mario, if you weren't bedfellows with IMAGINE ****ING BABY i'd still be faithful.

Wii isn't dead. It never has been. It is just targeted at a different audience than you so it isn't appealing.

Seriously does anyone still play on the Wii, I bought one july 2007 played on it for an hour then it went back to argos! when I play a game I don't wnt to be active, I want to sit down with a pitcher of my fav drink, a bag of doritos and play, not have a work out!

Re: BBC Dissects Microsoft's 'Magic Wand' Patent

I had my Wii for a few months and sold it back to the shop I bought it from for more than I got it somehow.

The Wii is targeted at the younger gamers, adults and fat people. A lot of people love the Wii, hence its success. If it wasn't popular then it wouldn't be one of the big 3 consoles. Besides, how many sane teens do you find (full stop) playing Mario goes to the olympics?

I think a motion controller is stewpid, like a steering wheel controller for your racing game..just no its GEHY!

Now unless it appeals to my audiance and you can use it as a sword and cut peoples faces off!

Re: BBC Dissects Microsoft's 'Magic Wand' Patent

Racing wheels are freakin' awesom. Especially with Forza 2.

Re: BBC Dissects Microsoft's 'Magic Wand' Patent

The only games where I've enjoyed the Wii's controls are Eledees and Mario Kart. Nowadays I just use for Okami, Fire Emblem, and Gamecube games
