Don't ever touch a game made by Cryptic
Just don't do it. I recently purchased (even pre-ordered!) their latest MMORPG, Star Trek Online, because within this perverted chest beats the heart of a Trekkie. Sadly, there were issues:
The game launched terrible, server instability and crashes.
The game was still as bug-ridden and broken as it was during beta.
Game only has one faction, The Federation. The opposing faction, The Klingon Empire, is nowhere near the quality of The Federation. It is like 10% of a faction.
It is a non-stop grindfest with nothing in common with Star Trek except the name and content; the heart isn't in it. Picard wouldn't just slaughter five million Klingons like this... not even Kirk would. This in-game Federation would make the Third Reich seem docile in comparison.
But I gave them the benefit of a doubt. No MMORPG in the history of mankind has had a perfect launch. Then came the Devs. and promised us a major content update which would us end-game content and finish the Klingon faction! Huzzah! But then they said it would take 1-2 months... And then they started offering new players an additional 60 days of free game time if they purchased the game now.
But wait... what about us loyal supporters? Our 30 days game time will run out on 4th of March. So we've got to pay two full monthly fees just waiting for this content update, whilst new players get to play for free until it is released? Ah, but surely Cryptic must recognize us and there has been some misunderstanding and they have given us free game time as well!
No.
Imagine the outcry on the forums. Loyal senior members started burning the Cryptic flag and screaming bloody murder. What does Cryptic do to solve the situation? BANHAMMER! They've banned the most vocal members, myself included. I canceled my subscription right there. Cryptic aint getting another dime from me, and I'd recommend the rest of you to not waste your money on such a terrible developer. But you know who the real victim is here?
Star Trek. It deserved better. Much better.
And now, some commentary on the situation by Jean-Luc Picard
