Easter...

Is it just me, or is Easter the strange cross-dressing uncle of holidays? I mean, it just doesn't seem to be able to find it's own identity. I know it is supposed to be about Jesus dying and coming back to life and all that, but the reality is far from it. It seems to borrow heavily from Christmas with the gifting, but in this case it is candy. Not to mention my family's Easter dinner is exactly the same as our Christmas dinner minus some of the super delicious things like Christmas ham.

Then you have the super-weird egg fetish going on at the same time. Did Jesus lay eggs? Did he like eggs? Did he as some symbolical gesture colour and hide eggs for his disciples to find? And how the hell is the Easter Bunny supposed to be? The furrsona of Christ?

Re: Easter...

I think that the eggs mean Jesus being reborn again, but I still want to know how drunk somebody has to be to think that Jesus being reborn has anything to do with giant bunnys though.

Re: Easter...

Goodness knows what all the egg business is all about - I'm sure Wikipedia has something on the subject to mislead us all...

It's meant to be the highlight of the Christian calendar, seeing as Jesus' death and resurrection is kind of central to the whole belief system, but Christmas (which wasn't even commanded to be celebrated unlike Easter) seems to take the starring role.

Personally, it's the hot cross bun thing that confuses me...that and calling it Good Friday...

Re: Easter...

All I know is it is just another day where I am forced to sit in church and listen to a preacher, then I go to my grannies for some food and to feel out of place as they talk sports and I am forced to be in the same room as my father.

That's just you native English speakers being silly. We Swedes call it Långfredagen which means "The Long Friday" in order to remind us of how long Jesus suffered before dying.

But what about food for you British? As I said previously, us Swedes just eat a dumbed-down Christmas dinner.

Re: Easter...

I have no idea what a traditional Easter dinner is supposed to be - I think it might be lamb...but I'm not sure. I could look it up but I can't be arsed.

I'm guessing it's just a scaled-down version of Christmas, like you have. I don't think I've ever done a traditional Easter meal - was a fussy eater as a kid and now I live with fussy eaters so couldn't have anything that nomalicious even if I wanted to.

Re: Easter...

Being a christian, I can tell you that eggs have nothing to do with jesus' resurrection. However I do remember reading something when I was younger about captain cook observing 2 tribes on easter island. Noth of them would send all of their men to a birds nest near the shore around the times the birds layed their eggs. Men from the tribes would have to climb up to it and then bring the eggs in the nest back down to their tribe leaders. It was an important event to them and they did it yearly. I have no idea if thats helps and I am going to find that history book to see if what I've remembered was correct. If I'm wrong feel free to ignore me.

Edit: Here we go. I did some quick searching and found the birdman cult on rapa nui the true name for a easter island. I was wrong as there were more than 2 tribes. They would all choose a hopu to represent them and race for the first egg of the season. Unfortunately no links to easter except the egg. Heres where it took place.

Re: Easter...

Lol the South Park easter episode has the answer to the origin of the eggs. (...) Yes, it is true!

Eugh. My parents are Catholic, so we had a leg of lamb for lunch today. I narrowly avoided going to Church by saying I was ill. I watched Ali G instead, and then had a Big Mac.

And ate chocolate. And had to put up with my dearest (not) little sister running around the house singing about easter eggs whilst I was trying to sleep. F my life.

Re: Easter...

^ Lol ninja'd. *Adds ninja'ing Tsuyu to his list of achievements*

Tis a good episode though.

Unrelated question: How many episodes are currently out in the new season of SP?

Re: Easter...

I went skiiing in France one Easter and we were staying in Serre Chevalier (before it became the epic ski resort it is now) and every single shop (all three of them) were full of chickens. Just chicken. Chocolate chickens.

Totally weird. As were the locals, come to think of it...

Re: Easter...

Found a little brightness today: My grandma gave me a me and each of my cousins a small basket filled with Reeses, Lindor Truffles and Ferrero Rocher!

Re: Easter...

Other than painting eggs I know no other easter traditions in Estonia - no bunnies, no chocolate. And it`s not even a big holiday to normal people (except that its a day off), especially since Estonia is a rather non-religious country.
We do however have another term for the holiday, on whatever day it might be, and its called "Lihavõtted",literally "Meat-taking"??... don`t ask me, I`m just as confused. Anyway, its probably some kind of old Estonian tradition. I have to look into this later.

When I'm around, every day is meat-taking day!

Easter isn't the worst holiday. What could make it worse is if it borrowed a bit from Halloween and children roamed the streets during the day wearing rabbit outfits, knocking door to door and asking for candy.

Funny that you should mention it, because that actually happens here in Sweden! When I was making this thread I totally forgot to mention that for some reason they decided to throw witches into the mix up here. Supposedly the Christian Easter coincides with a sort of "witch migration" from medieval times where all Swedish witches got up on the brooms and flew to a big meeting on an island(called "Blåkulla" if you wish to look it up for some obscure reason) where they had sex with Satan and stuff.

And if you can think of a better way to commemorate that little bit of folklore than having little girls dress up as Påskkärringar* (example) and go out begging for candy á la Halloween, I'd like to hear it!

*(literally means "Easter Crones/Hags")

Okay, you're screwing with me right?

Nope. Honest to Cthulhu, it is true.
Hmm... perhaps it is just the Swedish Easter that is fubar after all....

JohnDoe;375485 said:
That is among the most adorable things I have ever seen. I must purge it from my thoughts.

Yeah sure. It is not you they're gonna pester for free candy. Although this year has been relatively quiet. I guess that time I answered the door hung-over in nothing my underpants scared them off.

I was wondering...

I hope when we get a house we get new neighbors often, I want each Halloween to be scarier for the Treaters.

Re: Easter...

It's pretty ****ed up. I wouldn't celebrate it if not for my family.
