Favorite books

There is yet to be a thread on this. I want people to post some of their favorite books. They can be any genre, fictional or otherwise. I'm a fan of some older classics, especially John Steinbeck. I like most of the Harry Potter books and a few other newer books.

My Top 5:

1. Of Mice, and Men
2. To Kill A Mockingbird
3. Where The Red Fern Grows
4. Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince
5. Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix

Re: Favorite books

Does anybody know how I could acquire a copy of "Mein Kampf"?

Re: Favorite books

You could try here. That's where I find most of my obscure books, I am always surprised they have so much.

I would like to also recommend to kill a mockingbird for anyone who hasn't read it.

Re: Favorite books

I've read so many books, I can't really pick favourites but I love Steinbeck, CS Lewis, Isaac Asimov, Homer, Sophocles, Robert Jordan and To Kill A Mockingbird is an awesome book - everyone should read it.

I'm currently re-reading all my classical Greek and Roman texts - there's was some Russian bloke whose stuff I used to read but cannot remember his name...heavy going, but definitely worth it...

Have you ever read it? {Wiki Link} It may be a comic..but..there's paragraphs of random thoughts that the character johnny rants about. If I typed out everything that's said in the "comic" it would equal a short book.

"Such amusing fiction, these stories they tell. It always comes to this. If they really had a desire to live, they would've been more aware of how easy it is to die, would've chosen their actions more wisely. In these moments, you can tell they're not regretting having hurt you. They regret doing it to your face."

Re: Favorite books

I've never read it but my friend who likes anime reads it sometimes.

Re: Favorite books

Old testament...

Chronicles 2:36

1Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and made him king in his father's stead in Jerusalem. 2Joahaz was twenty and three years old when he began to reign; and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. 3And the king of Egypt deposed him at Jerusalem, and fined the land a hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold. 4And the king of Egypt made Eliakim his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem, and changed his name to Jehoiakim. And Neco took Joahaz his brother, and carried him to Egypt. 5Jehoiakim was twenty and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah his God. 6Against him came up Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and bound him in fetters, to carry him to Babylon. 7Nebuchadnezzar also carried of the vessels of the house of Jehovah to Babylon, and put them in his temple at Babylon. 8Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, and his abominations which he did, and that which was found in him, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah: and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his stead. 9Jehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah. 10And at the return of the year king Nebuchadnezzar sent, and brought him to Babylon, with the goodly vessels of the house of Jehovah, and made Zedekiah his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem.

11Zedekiah was twenty and one years old when he began to reign; and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem: 12and he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah his God; he humbled not himself before Jeremiah the prophet speaking from the mouth of Jehovah. 13And he also rebelled against king Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God: but he stiffened his neck, and hardened his heart against turning unto Jehovah, the God of Israel. 14Moreover all the chiefs of the priests, and the people, trespassed very greatly after all the abominations of the nations; and they polluted the house of Jehovah which he had hallowed in Jerusalem. 15And Jehovah, the God of their fathers, sent to them by his messengers, rising up early and sending, because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling-place: 16but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of Jehovah arose against his people, till there was no remedy. 17Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldeans, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion upon young man or virgin, old man or hoary-headed: he gave them all into his hand. 18And all the vessels of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of Jehovah, and the treasures of the king, and of his princes, all these he brought to Babylon. 19And they burnt the house of God, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof. 20And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon; and they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia: 21to fulfil the word of Jehovah by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed its sabbaths: for as long as it lay desolate it kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years. 22Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of Jehovah by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, Jehovah stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying, 23Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath Jehovah, the God of heaven, given me; and he hath charged me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whosoever there is among you of all his people, Jehovah his God be with him, and let him go up.

Re: Favorite books

Is that a King James version you got there? I read the Message myself...

Re: Favorite books

I dunno, may not be... My bible is 30 years old it is passed by generation.

Re: Favorite books

Probably a King James translation then if it's that old...

Re: Favorite books

I find Job the most interesting and the most moving. I love Revelation, but the prospect of that being all sinners eternal future is so hard to think about and impossible to comprehend.

Re: Favorite books

Keekos,
The bible from which you read is not the King James. The King James uses “Lord God” in the place of “Jehovah”. I think that it is wonderful that a sacred book can be passed down generation to generation and even better that you agree with the views of your ancestors. If you are wondering about what version you are reading then check the title page, there is usually a version name given: “Holy Bible”, King James”, “The Way”, “Watch Tower”, and so on. Usually these versions differ in language use and simple translation. Different translations are preferred by different denominations. If your Bible does not have a title page and/or the inscription on the cover is unreadable you can also take it to your local bible store and they can help you identify your version. Hope this helps.

Re: Favorite books

Not to bust anyones bubble but lets not turn this into a big religious topic (not that I have a problem with it, I'm devout a Lutheran myself) but just so it doesn't get closed. Andy closed one a while back because it got into such a heated debate and I don't want that to happen.
