Re: Favorite books

I never even heard of them until my dad gave me the first three for Christmas when I was 18. Got hooked and read the other three but got gradually more and more disappointed - the films made me so mad coz they are awful - I understand she has a schedule to fit to and she is trying to get darker as the story progresses but I think she may be her own undoing by making the plot so twisting that she may not be able to reach a satisfactory conclusion. Basically, either Harry or Voldemort have to die and it would be totally crap if neither did and some other ending was reached. Similarly, it would suck if the ending was predictable before the reader got to it.

Fantasy for children is a difficult one - she can't go too dark and she can't patronise. I don't envy her.

Can't get too dark?
Dumbledore(SP?) died....I could hear the children crying..
I even cried..

Am I the ONLY person who liked the movies???

Re: Favorite books

Hehe - no you're not, but I do struggle with the whole book to movie adaptation thing. That aside,
dumbledore dying
was not too dark - I actually was a little disappointed by that scene...but if you look at the fantasy genre as a whole, you can see that other books are far darker in content and focus on pain or sexual themes - sometimes combining the two - and are far more graphic in places. Because of the large pre-teen market that read Harry Potter, JK Rowling cannot go too far into the details of certain deaths and torturous scenes - she hints at them in places, but does not detail much. The implications alone are pretty frightening and she paints a good image in the head whilst you read, so you are able to draw your own conclusions from what she implies.

when I saw the first movie I was a bit unhappy. I was ranting at my dad about it "those wren't the students that went in the woods with hagrid! Hey what happened to norbert. THat's not what happened, what the hell!!"

But the mroe that came out the more I enjoyed it. I just love the Characters.
I do love my little Daniel Radcliff.

You're right about the book thing.

Re: Favorite books

I wonder if Hermione and Ron get it on properly in the last book? And if this book really is the last one - I know there are only 7 terms at Hogwarts, but it would give JK extra scope to branch out into darker, more adult material if she so wished with some kind of spin-off series? I dunno. I'm gonna see how much it's gonna cost and pre-order my copy now, if I can.

Re: Favorite books

I read the first four pretty much straight through. They are such light reading and yet well written enough to be fun. I'm looking forward to the seventh this summer.

Another set of books that I liked was the Sword of Shannara series. I read The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara! trilogy last year but haven't read the High Druid of Shannara series yet though. Also by Terry Brooks is Running with the Demon which was pretty good.

Re: Favorite books

Movies are never as good as the books. I.e.: Eragon. I waited two years to see that movie… and when it came out, I almost cried. Instead, I got dead quiet and was silently steaming under my little rain cloud in the back seat of Maria’s van :getlost:. That was terrible… they even got the hair colors wrong! Every one was blonde, except the one person that was supposed to be! But the Harry Potter movies? Not so bad… I mean, the scenery was great, the character really fit their descriptions. But yes, there were quite a few things they left out. And the end of the Half Blood Prince?
I HATED how Dumbledore died. He died begging!
That’s just not cool. And when the first Dumbledore actor died… the second guy just wasn’t the same. He was a bit too lively, and didn’t seem as majestic and patient as the first guy.

Hahah bull****, he didn't die begging, he WANTED to die. It was the only way. :P:lol:

yeah I was sad about the actor dumbledoor. The first one was WAY better, but I guess he's doing okay.

that's like the voice actor of Uncle from Avatar dying.

Re: Favorite books

I'd like to see what they do with adapting the fifth book of Harry Potter for film - it's quite stripped back in comparison and not so much action as subtlety - Prof. Umbridge and her detention, the DA and so on...

Re: Favorite books

She reminded me of my old math teacher at high school - Miss Cartland. Pure evil and a Margaret Thatcher lookalike. Gave me 4% in my end of year exam coz I couldn't do some dumb math thing that I have never needed since and wouldn't accept my dyslexia diagnosis as genuine.

She was, like, 100 when I was 12 so perhaps she is dead now...

Probably.
I'm mighty dyslexic too. ESPECIALLY when it comes to numbers. I'll be thinking 52, in my head and it'll come out 25. Augh..

But it would be interesting to see how they portray his detention sessions.

Re: Favorite books

It will be doubly interesting to see how long they can get away with a PG rating (one above a kids rating, so dunno what the equivalent is across the pond where you are)...I can't see them getting away with much more unless they bump up the rating and then run the risk of losing a huge chunk of their target audience coz the kids under 12 won't be allowed in...

Doesn't mean they won't be able to buy the movie later.
but it would be a BIG drop at the box office.

Re: Favorite books

Me and numbers mix like two angry drunks fighting over a girl... Except I kick the numbers a$$e$...

Re: Favorite books

hmm favorite books....NONE i hate reading but reading lvl is high

Re: Favorite books

1. Halo: First Strike
2. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
3. A Series of Unfortunate Events Book the Second: The Repitle Room

Re: Favorite books

Seriously- the first in a series= Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment. A bit far-fetched and strange, but incredible beyond any expectations I had beforehand. Go to, no sprint to the nearest bookstore and buy this book if you like good writing.
