finished the game my likes and dislikes.

I have now finished fable 2 with a character and I wish to write what I think about the game good and bad points. I have read in reviews that some people think its an improvement over fable 1 in every aspect this I strongly disagree with, I think overall fable 1 is a better game I hope I can explain why below.

good things

(a) I like how can do jobs such as bartending adds an extra element to game.
(b) sales, good extra element to trading.
(c) dog, good that it sniffs out treasure, and can level it up.
(d) having a kid is a nice addition.
(e) the continuity of new quests becoming available in the game and some quests after completion of game adds some more game time.
(f) the gargoyles are a nice extra element although it took me till around 3/4 of game time to realise what those voices were and to kill my first one.
(g) setting rent and prices in shops is a nice feature to see affect on economy.

bad things - sorry this is long.

(a) The first one has to be the new control system for battles, switching spells is awkrawd and using them is far worse than fable 1, you spend the time to level up the spells and then you getting hit whilst waiting for them to charge up, the mana system was way better and the aiming system for target spells was better in fable 1 as well as the method used to change spells, in fable 1 the order of spells could be fine tuned and was easy to switch spells during battles. We then have the one button fighting which I think is worse again, holding the button to block and charge special attack, weapon been auto put away when want it kept out, awkrawd to maintain zoom view on ranged weapon whilst firing. Target spells and area of affect spells should have been kept seperate.
(b) Next control system for inventory, someone decided that the hotkey system wasnt to make it into fable 2, this wouldnt be so bad if the ingame menu system was kept but that was also dropped and to finalise the problems the menu accessed via start button was very laggy to use (improved when installed to hdd on new dashboard), this made repeated use of specific items such as experience potions very clumsy to do.
(c) Silver key chests, wont go to much into specifics as spoilers but I will just say I think the contents of the chests especially higher ones is too weak and a lack of a reward, in fable 1 we had the elexir of life or legendary equipment whilst its more generic items in silver chests on fable 2.
(d) Clothing and lack of armour, I think this was a big howler, I seen nothing wrong with armour, and its replaced with things like poshness stats, so the emphasis moved from battle status to social status.
(e) Trading, everytime buy an item have to click again on the ok and a lag as the dvd loads the thank you speech from the trader, then after leaving the trader screen I see my money been shown on the screen seperatly for each item, this can go on for ages if I have brought many things, it would have been far more logical to just show a total size transaction. The trading in fable 2 overall seems much worse, rarely quantities above 1 in each shop but instead more shops selling 1 of each item. The number in stock vs price element removed (presumaby due to the poor design of it in fable 1 tlc leading to easy money).
(f) I read many times in reviews etc. that fable 1 was too easy, didnt read it so much for fable 2 in official reviews but I have from people who have played the game, surprisingly the fighting in fable 2 is way easier, its quite hard to lose a battle mainly because if you facing multiple enemies they usually come at you only one or two at once with the rest standng back. Also a lack of proper boss fights.
(g) load times, fable 1 had annoying load times, fable 2 unfortenatly takes it to a new level, the areas are bigger so in theory you spending more time exploring rather than moving in between areas and so have a net decrease in loading screens, but once you able to instantly move between areas the exploring element is reduced and the loading wait is increased. Combined with the decision to not utilise hdd caching this is a bad weakness of the game. Noticeable improvement when installed to hdd on new dashboard.
(h) lack of mini map, this combined with the much larger areas I found myself often getting loss, the breadcrumb system struggles to keep up when running fast and it was a poor decision, PM's reasoning is he wanted us to look at the scenery instead of minimap. Well PM I was looking at the breadcrumbs not the scenery or simply having to keep using the laggy pause menu to access a poorly drawn area map.
(i) less spells, the most exciting spells gone, multi arrows, beserk, heal life, physical shield, summon a joke compared to the very good one used in fable 1.
(j) sound affects and music, music was way better in fable 1, sound affects well the swords just dont sound right to me and were perfect in fable 1, although the legendary katana sword sound ok. The guns sound very good in fable 2 tho.
(k) I dont like the inclusion of guns I felt they were put in to accomodate gun fans since so many xbox games involve guns. it makes the game seem too realistic versus the fairy tale feeling I liked about fable 1.
(l) game glitches, like shopkeepers not in shops, dogs walking through walls, sister walking through walls, crash on a gamesmaster.
(m) finally the single save system, luckily I didnt get a glitched save however I dont like the idea that I have to start a entirely new game just to try something else in the game. Particurly choices that are given to you around the end of the game.

I gave the game a fair chance I felt by playing it till the end, it got better after I progressed a bit as early game was poor but overall fable 1 is better. The defenite thing about that is if I played fable 2 without playing fable 1 (was my original plan) I likely would have ditched it as the game didnt get me hooked whilst I was hooked on fable 1 immediatly. Fable 2 is a good game but not great, fable 1 is a great game :)

I know people will disagree with me thats fine :) many prefer this to the first game.

Re: finished the game my likes and dislikes.

Well man I've only glanced over this because it is so long and I'm anxious to get to gaming in a min (just browsing forums before hand and smokin' up lol) but it seems like a well written list both ways. It took me even LONGER to figure out those were gargoyles! Haha, I was so happy when I shot my first one...the jerk-offs.

I never played Fable I, so I may give that a shot sometime soon. Having not played Fable I, I think Fable II is one of my favorite games of all time. Seems like a few of your complaints are based on a comparison to #1 so I would find it interesting to play the original and see what I think of it after playing the 2nd. I like the magic system in Fable II actually, except that it always resets all the higher levels to whatever your lowest level spell is when you first start playing. Maybe this is a glitch, maybe it's intentional, but I think it would be better if you could definitively set your spells and it keep them even after resetting the console.
There is a mini map, though. Maybe you know this and it's just not what you mean..you probably mean a minimap on screen. But if you go into the start menu there's a minimap...just takes an extra step to see it and I understand if you don't like that set up.

Anyway time to shoot some people on CoD...

Personally I believe the Fable 2 spells system is much much better. Charging up the spells isn't that hard or annoying IMO. Every since you have Raise Dead, which gives you time to charge up your spells, as the enemies are distracted by your summoned creatures/undead.

the mana system was way better
I have to agree with you. I don't like the idea of having no mana at all. You could spam cast every spell without watching your mana, which is, IMO, a shame.

and the aiming system for target spells was better in fable 1 as well as the method used to change spells, in fable 1 the order of spells could be fine tuned and was easy to switch spells during battles.
No. The aiming is much better in Fable 2, as it grants you the impossibility of accidentally targeting innocent people while casting/unleashing your spells, unlike Fable 1, when pressing L.

We then have the one button fighting which I think is worse again, holding the button to block and charge special attack,
Indeed. I think it's best to have several buttons as combat buttons. It makes gameplay a lot better IMO.

weapon been auto put away when want it kept out, awkrawd to maintain zoom view on ranged weapon whilst firing.
The automatic passive weapon stance is made like that, because of the integrated "strike-fear-into-civillians-when-having offensive-weaponstance" thingie.
As for the target/AoE spells. I think it should be as is. Besides, it makes targeting/AoE'ing much easier and quicker.

Agreed. It annoyed me that you'd have to enter "sub-categories" in your menu in order to do those quick things, like dye-ing your clothes.

(c) Silver key chests, wont go to much into specifics as spoilers but I will just say I think the contents of the chests especially higher ones is too weak and a lack of a reward, in fable 1 we had the elexir of life or legendary equipment whilst its more generic items in silver chests on fable 2.
Agreed once again. For instance, the chest at Castle Fairfax, which contains 50,000 gold, is not even worth the trouble. I'd rather throw away all my 50 keys to some demon door in exchange for an awesome weapon, like Necropolis in Fable TLC.

(d) Clothing and lack of armour, I think this was a big howler, I seen nothing wrong with armour, and its replaced with things like poshness stats, so the emphasis moved from battle status to social status.
Disagreed. As you may have seen the interview with PM; he said he preferred to keep out the armour stats, as he wants people to equip their clothes, each in a unique way. Personally I agree with him, as I thought the exact same thing. To be even more precise; I'm glad he didn't integrate the armour/stats system, except for attractiveness/evilness etc.

I think this is a personal preference, if it comes to your statement. Personally I like the gold loss/gain display. It gives me more of a clear way to see what I have spent precisely. As for the poor design, yes. Fable TLC had a way too easy to obtain money. At least here, in Fable 2, you really earn your money by doing jobs, assassination, trading, etc.

Exactly. The bosses were indeed way too easy. Especially Lucien, which I wouldn't really call a boss fight. :realmad:
Fable 1 had a bigger challenge if it comes to combat/boss fights. A nice example is the Summoner Creature. Even the Summoner had more health than most enemies in Fable 2. -.-

load times, fable 1 had annoying load times, fable 2 unfortenatly takes it to a new level, the areas are bigger so in theory you spending more time exploring rather than moving in between areas and so have a net decrease in loading screens, but once you able to instantly move between areas the exploring element is reduced and the loading wait is increased. Combined with the decision to not utilise hdd caching this is a bad weakness of the game. Noticeable improvement when installed to hdd on new dashboard.
The reason loading takes that long when using the instant relocate button is because it uses real-time. If you're teleporting to another location, it actually takes, for instance, 19 hours to get to Oakfield. But, when teleporting in the same area, it won't take longer than a second.

No and yes. Exploring without a minimap is indeed much better and funnier, especially gameplay. But we do have a minimap when you're in your menu. However, I'm not happy with the fact that he didn't include a World Map.

(i) less spells, the most exciting spells gone, multi arrows, beserk, heal life, physical shield, summon a joke compared to the very good one used in fable 1.
I don't think we have less spells, but other spells instead. I do miss Beserk and Physical shield. I'd like that "Magical Sword Shield thingie" from Garth as well, which should bve available to Willusers only.

(j) sound affects and music, music was way better in fable 1, sound affects well the swords just dont sound right to me and were perfect in fable 1, although the legendary katana sword sound ok. The guns sound very good in fable 2 tho.
The music from Fable 1 is no doubt much better. The sound has, let's say a better quality. I don't know how to define it otherwise.
As for the weapon sounds. Yes, the Katana sound is awesome, although I don't like the gun sound. I don't like guns at all, that is. ^_^

(k) I dont like the inclusion of guns I felt they were put in to accomodate gun fans since so many xbox games involve guns. it makes the game seem too realistic versus the fairy tale feeling I liked about fable 1.
Remember that the time difference between Fable 1 & 2 is kinda big. It's 500 years, so yea. I think they've already invented guns.
Realistic? Don't mind me, but the guns aren't that modern...

(l) game glitches, like shopkeepers not in shops, dogs walking through walls, sister walking through walls, crash on a gamesmaster.
There's not even one game that is perfect. Every game has glitches, whether discovered or not. Try to prove me otherwise, but I don't think anyone could.

(m) finally the single save system, luckily I didnt get a glitched save however I dont like the idea that I have to start a entirely new game just to try something else in the game. Particurly choices that are given to you around the end of the game.
Indeed. I don't like the fact that one save overwrites the other when playing a character. It won't give you the opportunity to go one save back if you've done something accidentally. This really fails, I can tell you.

In overall, I think I'd still prefer Fable 2 to Fable 1. Especially with the new DLC coming up, and perhaps even the expansions.

I guess that's all I have to say.

actually you are worng. he ment he wanted to save the same hero into 2 different slots liek you could in fable 1, so before spire he could destroy the temple of shadows to see what its like after, then without starting a new game see what its like to destroy the temple of light on the same hero

Man the glitches are NOT bad. Sure there's a lot of them but I haven't found one that's a problem yet. Most are kinda entertaining, some are VERY entertaining. Now, I do know some people have gotten stuck and had to start new games...so those are bad. Hopefully they'll be fixed. But I've been lucky I guess.

Re: finished the game my likes and dislikes.

fable 2 is a great game, but its not fable. it doesn't have the epicness that wants me to continue playing, unlike fable tlc. 30 or 40 minutes into the game, i just change to gears 2. things that wuold help this -
MORE CUTSCENES - im sorry, but look at EVERY game out there. cutscenes are essential for keeping up with the story, and making it more enjoyable. i like the interactive 'cutscene' idea, its new, but i liked how in the first game you got PROPER cutscenes, although that might just be me.

BETTER MUSIC - fable tlc had one of the best soundtracks from any game ive played, it, again, added to the epicness. what would be good if lionhead released a fable 1 soundtrack on xbox live that you could download and play on fable 2, a bit like they did with soulcalibur, and you could assign different songs to different regions.

MORE... STUFF - ok, im NOT retarded, i know about the dlc, but *scoffs* 3 quests? itll take me a day, less maybe. all the new clothes and shizzle will be cool, but i DEMAND a proper expansion with SOME FREAKIN FABLE LORE! i hated how they had all this stuff about the court of blades on tales of albion, and then it turns out the games about a freakin douchebag building a tower that lets him resurrect his family, and how you have to spend the whole game trying to get three guys that just abandon you after the game. not cool, lionhead, NOT COOL. what would be cool would be (yes,ANOTHER) return of JoB. he was a badass, and i dont care if its repetitive, its still better than lucien, the biggest letdown character in any videogame ive ever played.

I see so many red lines from my spell check. Not that I actually use it.
Anyways, It would of been great if it is about the destruction of the heroes' guild and all that from the Tales of Albion. But if it did, we would have the same regions all over again, and the time would be close to the time in Fable 1. Fable 2 is a game of its own, it is not Fable 1, why would you want another Fable 1? The differences between the two sequels make them both unique. Bringing Jack of Blades back is not so much of a good idea, and the "hero gathering" story line is, I would say, epic.

^ im not saying i want it EXACTLY like fable 1, but i want it to relatively remiscient to the original. i like that in sequels. and now its killed the fable series for me. what happened in those years between the first fable and fable 2? we will never know, or at least experience it in a game, because going forward 500 years in the second one, then going back 400 years in the third is just RETARDED. i like the idea of it being 500 years in the future, it shows the change of albion. what i really dislike is that it suddenly jumps 500 years. if PM and lionhead are planning another 3 fables, is it gonna go forward 500 years each time? will we get a fable 3: modern warfare, fable 4: fallout and then fable 5: mass effect? i bloody hope not. why couldnt they have done it in installments, so fable 2 was 100 years later, and fable 3 100 years after that..and so on. then there would be more in common with each game, but the begining game and the end game would be VERY different, but we would have seen how albion had changed. it works with the elder scrolls, having periodic intervals between each game, why wouldnt it work for fable?

Re: finished the game my likes and dislikes.

I believe that mostly for gameplay, Fable 2 is way better than Fable (of course with te exceptions of things such as the lack of hotkeys for items and so), but that is the gamplay only.
I definetily agree that Fable 1 was waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better on the aspects of music, lore, and that feeling of... guess you can call it epicness.

So yeah, mainly, Fable 2 is a really good game, however it is not as Fable-ish as most fans would've expected. Fable 2 just lacks that certain something in regard of environment.

Datahere thanks for detailed reply.

Your comment about the clothes is a very good point, with armour stats everyone just wears best armour, like I said in my 1st post depending on what you want from the game fable 2 might be preffered. Fable 1 less emphasis was put into the fighting side of the game, lack of bosses, spells, armour and the ability to buy experience potions to counter the lack of fighting.

One more point I wish to add is I feel the quests in fable 1 were more unique and momorable with an overall better storyline.

To the guy that laughed please respect my views and I dont think fable 2 is a bad game it is a good game just I feel fable 1 is better.

i feel the exact same way. fable one had way better atmosphere, and cus you where a hero from the famed heros guild every thing you did made you feel more important. now in every ones eyes your just that guy/girl who is famous and is a really nice/evil purson.

the guild should have been rebuilt by the end of the game because you just saved the world and heros shouldnt be considered bad anymore. and i was also thinking about the whole idea of villagers or w.e burning down and destroying the guild. isnt the guild built up of trained fighters and will users and such? if the heros were to have defended the guild then the townspeople would have been SEVERELY outmatched..

Even in TLC, heros were starting to be hated, like the chief in Witchwood, telling the hero they weren't needed. Everything was fine, so 500 years later, there is bound to be more hostility, from the villagers, and the wife turning the hero in, cause he was being hunted and nearly starving to death. He was good. He wasn't evil.
Npc's are always negative, unless you play good, and then it is just the money they fall for, or a particular place you own.:D So I quickly decided it's more fun to stay single. No spouse.
I am not the writer, but I enjoy the game.:) Besides, I am hoping the Guild is rebuilt, in dlc, or Fable 3.:)

I hope so as well, but not the same-looking guild, but a unique, better-looking one.
