Wow. A picture of Raistlin. I haven't seen this in forever... minus the captions.
He can't handle the truth of Oil and Gold?

It's just a general people perk really when it comes down to it. We can't help but sticking our noses in other peoples business, especially when the people involved think they might have something to gain such as allies, resources, or reputation (making their own government look like the good guys by helping the underdogs.)
Most of the time it's opportunism, temptation and greed simply put, We got involved because it was too much effort not to get involved. Look carefully enough on the school playground and you'll see similar behavior, kids helping each other out then expecting something in return later on or simply being noesy for the sake of satisfying their own curiosity.
Heck maybe our government will go all mob boss on Libya in the next decade or so and throw the typical "We donna you a favour, now you gonna do us a favour" routine at them next time they want something. They most likely figure Libya owes them now, and will try to use this to their advantage at some point.
At least that's my interpretation of the situation anyway.

The same reason people with insecurities are so judgemental. If you focus on how other people aren't perfect, it's easier to overlook what you hate about yourself.

I never knew what it was from, but I haven't seen that picture with captions in about 5 years.
What's it from originally?
The character's name is Raistlin Majere. He's a Wizard/Mage from the DragonLance series (Which is much like Forgotten Realms, owned once by TSR and now belonging to Wizards of the Coast). He's my second favorite character in the series, his brother, Caramon Majere, is my first.
The DragonLance series isn't as huge as Forgotten Realms, but if you're wanting to get into a new series of Fantasy books, I'd definitely suggest DragonLance (First Three books: Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Winter Night, Dragons of Spring Dawning).
In-fact, some pretty amazing bands have made songs about the character Raistlin. Here are a few:
