Re: Harry Potter-Love or Hate?

Well what's everyone's favorite movie(so far, of course)?

I think they keep getting better and better, but as I re-watch the movies I think my favorite has now become PoA.

Did anyone hate Hermione's eyebrows in Gof?...annoying and it makes me laugh everytime I see the movie.

Man, I just can't wait until OotP:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Re: Harry Potter-Love or Hate?

I really like Prisoner of Azkaban too. I like how they re-did Draco's hair. I was getting tired of the slicked back look. He looks much better now. Plus I like BuckBeak :D

Re: Harry Potter-Love or Hate?

Angel there is always goona be darkness in the world. So the kids should be prepared to face the facts. Sure its fiction but still darkness is real. I mean killings and stealing and hate are all things that make this world dark.

Re: Harry Potter-Love or Hate?

Besides, if an 8 year old can read a 748 page book, they're probably mature enough to handle that stuff. My favorite movie was probably the 4th. I hated the third, because the guy who directed it did a terrible job. And I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE! the new Dumbledore.

Looking forward to reading the final instalment - I'll do the usual thing of buying the book, reading it in a day and then probably return it and buy something else...

What?!! You DON"T KEEP the Harry Potter books?!!!! I mean I do the same thing, read it in a day because I am a fast reader, but why return. Don't like keeping a HP collection?:( Oh well, it is your decision and I kinda see the advantages, but still.

Good point  Well, you're ganna have to love the new dumbledore, ;) the other one died :(

Re: Harry Potter-Love or Hate?

I know, it was so sad, he was such a perfect dumbledore. Too bad Gandalf wouldn't do it, even he would be better than the idiot they got.

Yes, Richard Harris was the splitting image of Dumbledore, 100% precise. I shall miss him, he was a marvelous actor. I don't hate Michael Gambon, I think he is a good choice for a replacement for Harris, although Harris was and always will be ten times better. Still I have grown to like Gambon and his work very much and I look forward to seeing him and Harry in Dumbledore's office after:

Sirius dies.:'(

I would have liked to have seen Ian McKellen play Dumbledore, but since he declined and he already played Gandalf, I can't blame him, and I think I would be reminded of his character in LOTR.

Again, R.I.P. Richard Harris.:(

Re: Harry Potter-Love or Hate?

He doesn't even have a british accent though, which seems kind of weird to me. Oh well, I guess I just can't get over how different the books are from the movies.

Ability to read well at an early age does not necessarily mean emotional maturity is at the same level.

Oh I loved my HP books - really I did - but my 12 year old neighbour on my old estate was starved of reading material and coz she's a bright kid but her family had no money, I gave her all my books. Since they are widely available at the library, it's no great loss to me and when Order of the Phoenix came out, I sent her my copy. My memory means I remember books so well it kinda spoils it for me to read them again shortly after, so by the time they reach the library I'm close to forgetting all the good bits and so enjoy it all over again.

It usually means intelligence though, and intelligence is usually coupled with at least sufficient maturity to read HP

There are many different variations of a british accent, but yes, his is actually scottish, and he asked if he could keep a little of it. He is different, I will say that, but I enjoy him more and more. I do not like, however, his robes. When Harris played Dumbledore his robes/costumes were much more lavish and beautiful, but now they are more simple and plain, which isn't all that bad. I think Gambon still tries to bring the charm that Dumbledore has to the screen, which is nice.

Lets just hope they don't change anyone else, although I don't it. It seems that everyone, or mostly everyone(not talking about Dan, Emma, or Rupert since we know they signed on for the last two films) is set and signed for the last two films. It will be sad to see:
Sirius go. Gary Oldman is one of my all-time favorite actors, along with Alan Rickman.

So many great actors and actress's in the films.:D

Certainly, but again, comprehension is not the same as the ability to handle the material in an appropriate emotional manner. It's like I've always said to anyone who has asked me if they should let their kid read the books (why the hell they ask me I have no idea - I have about as much affinity with children as a slug does with salt): if they think their child can deal with the issues represented in the books then fine - but when you get kids reading material that they cannot cope with and the parents are not aware of the content, then you get potential problems. Most likely nightmares...thing is, we tend not to think of HP books as scary or whatever because most of us are in our mid teens to early 20's. Imagine yourself as an 8 year old with a highly active and visual imagination and your perspective changes somewhat.

I'm not saying all kids shouldn't read it, I was just saying that Rowling originally intended for the books to grow with the reader and Harry is 11/12 at the beginning - and there will be some kids who will enjoy the story but it will frighten them.

Re: Harry Potter-Love or Hate?

this thread should have a poll.^_^

You speak wisely, young one. I shall set one up immediately!

I agree. Children who are too young and not mature enough should not read the series, as over the years it has gotten a lot darker. Those who have a very vivid imagination may have nightmares from reading the content from the books. No doubt they will enjoy the books if it is right up their ally, but like you said it could and can scare them. At first the series seemed very much geared towards the younger audience, but as the series has progressed, developed, and grown, it seems now that some of the content is geared for the older audience(teens and above), but from the beginning everyone read them, so it wasn't exactly geared towards little kids, it just felt like it.:P

Re: Harry Potter-Love or Hate?

Well, I just hope that parents will be able to let their kids read the books, or just do what my parents do with my little brother. They read him the book aloud and kind of filter the content as they go :P

Re: Harry Potter-Love or Hate?

I started reading the books when I was 12/13. In middle school. So maybe I was younger. Only 2 were released then, and I read them both. so as I got older, more books were released. So if I have kids, I'll give them the books in moderation. One for every year. :D

Re: Harry Potter-Love or Hate?

I dont hate the movies but i like the books more. Which is how i fell about the outsiders.
