If image caps are put in place, not just scaling down on the horizontal dimension or even both, but actual caps that cannot be exceeded, and if members practice some etiquette and restrain themselves from stacking maximum sized images on top of each other, then I'd be all for two or perhaps even three images. But I know better than to rely on the good sense of others. This is why we can't have nice things, because people take advantage and abuse anything given to them.
