Re: I JUST SAW THE BEST KOREAN MOVIE EVA
Hello, I found this thread by searching google for "korean movie forum". I had no idea I would find a website about Fable.
At any rate, I'm here, so I'll add my contribution to this Korean movie thread.
Here are some of my thoughts about a few I've seen:
1. Attack the Gas Station
This movie was the basis for many future purchases. The actors are so memorable and funny that I sought out their other movies. There is nothing like this in American cinema, and this was one of the first Korean movies I watched, in early 2005.
2. S Diary
I normally abhor romantic comedies, but I had never seen how the Koreans make such a movie.
3. Bad Guy
This movie is about a guy that tricks a college girl into becoming a prostitute. It clearly shows the Stockholm Syndrome, in which an abducted person can fall in love with the person that has taken them hostage. This provides one with many questions and it is difficult to determine who is really bad. Everyone is guilty of something.
4. 3-Iron
The title of this movie is actually Empty Houses in Korean. It's about a college graduate that spends his time breaking into houses and fixing anything that is broke. He'll also spend the night, do their laundry, and eat some of their food.
5. Secret Sunshine
There are 2 main ways to interpret this movie. It either shows the flaws of having religious beliefs or the dangers of misinterpreting such beliefs. This is a fascinating movie and will appeal to those with philosophical minds.
6. Barking Dogs Never Bite
A man is trying very hard to become a full professor but a dog in his apartment complex keeps barking and irritates him.
7. The Day a Pig Fell into the Well
This was my first exposure to a type of movie that is very, very slow and requires much patience. It's about the darker aspects of relationships - adultery, jealousy, and even murder.
8. Rules of Dating
A man is obsessed with having sex with one of his co-workers and even offers her money at one point. I have never seen a man so desperate before; this is very amusing to watch.
9. Pisces
'Pisces' means 'fish' in Latin, and there are some fish in this movie, but it's about how love can turn into an unhealthy obsession. Or, on the other hand, it shows what happens when someone can't tell that another person loves them.
This is what I call a 'shocking' movie.
10. Memories of Murder
This is the best murder mystery movie I have ever seen.
11. Mulberry
A very attractive woman in a small village becomes the sexual desire of all the men when her husband leaves for long periods of time, to go gambling. This is extremely funny and shows what men will do just to have sex. It's as if men are mindless creatures and exist solely to copulate. I suppose that living in a small village without video games, movies, or books would force men to spend all their free time finding ways to have sex.
12. Spider Forest
Sometimes movies are not easy to classify. This is utterly bizarre and is about a forest in which the spiders have spirits of people. I didn't understand what I saw, but I will never forget it.
13. Gagman
An unsuccessful comedian, his barber, and a very attractive woman form a plot to rob a bank. This movie is an odd combination of very serious and very funny. Not easy to classify.
14. Big Bang
A man has just learned his wife wants to divorce him because he 'always follows the rules'. This turns his normally serene attitude into one of wantonness and he teams up with a real criminal and they cause much mindless mayhem.
15. The Power of Kangwon Province
A work of art. Imagine going to an art museum and it is filled with paintings that require 2 hours of observation. This would be one of those paintings.
16. My Sassy Girl
This is part romantic comedy and part science fiction. Normally, I would avoid this type of movie (because it looks like a romance movie only), but it is Korean and thus, outside the realm of prediction. If you've never seen a Korean movie, then this would be a good introduction.
17. Tazza: The High Rollers
Hwatu is a popular card game in Korea, akin to poker in the U.S. A young gambler loses a lot of money in hwatu and seeks out a successful hwatu player, to learn from him. There is a lot of swindling in this movie, as you can imagine.
18. My Wife is a Gangster 1, 2, and 3
The first two movies in this series are closely related, but the third stands alone. Thus, the first one must be watched before the second, but the third can be watched out of order. In fact, the third one stars a Chinese actress, rather than a Korean. These are all very funny.
19. The Vengeance Trilogy
This is made of 3 movies - Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. Oldboy has received considerable attention in the U.S., while the other two have largely been ignored. Oldboy is my least favorite of the three and Lady Vengeance is my favorite. These movies are about revenge and not for the timid. Oldboy would do very well in American theaters, because it's very violent and easy to understand (which explains why the DVD sales are so high).
20. Whispering Corridors Series
There are 4 movies in this series so far and each one is quite good, in my opinion. The 4th one is definitely my favorite because it is very philosophical. These are horror movies that take place in an all girls high school and the first one is credited for starting the Asian horror boom. These would not do very well in American theaters because of the slow pacing, but it suits me just fine.
21. Samaritan Girl
Two teenage girls (that are lesbians) want to take a vacation to Europe. One of them becomes a prostitute and another collects the money. What's interesting is that one of their fathers is a police officer and the way he treats the 'customers' is very shocking. This movie is regarded as a family film (not joking) and should be viewed by everyone. This could definitely serve as a supplement in a grade school sex education class.
22. Birdcage Inn
A young prostitute starts working at a small family owned inn. The daughter in the family hates her at first. But she starts to have problems with her own boyfriend and this makes her realize that sex is not simple. She becomes empathic and realizes the life of a prostitite is not easy. I love movies that deal with sex as the primary topic in a straightforward way. American movies don't do that and Americans in general are easily offended by sex. This is a very truthful movie.
23. Ad-Lib Night
The pace in this movie is so slow that most people would not be able to finish watching. In fact, most people would regard this as 'stupid', even people that are supposedly educated (have a college degree). However, this is a fascinating look at everyday Korean culture, and takes place largely in a house where the father is dying. I found myself mesmerized from beginning to end.
24. Raybang
This is the story of 3 taxi drivers that are desperate for something better in life than driving all day. They each have failed relationships and attempt to form new ones, and fail again. This has a very interesting soundtrack and the story becomes quite riveting, much more so than one would expect. I would say this is a 'classic'.
25. Christmas in August
This is considered a classic in Korea and is very sad. There are certain scenes that still haunt me.
26. No. 3
I found myself laughing throughout most of this movie and it's about some real gangsters and some gangster failures, and the private lives of their wives. At one point, one of the wives proclaims, "I only care about 3 things - cash, credit cards, and sex." This is a must watch. The title of the movie refers to the rank of the main gangster in this story.
27. Green Fish
A 26 year old man finishes his military duty and looks for a job and finds one - in a gang. This movie is perfection and was done by the director of Secret Sunshine.
28. Family Matters
A young married couple is having problems. The wife works to support her husband, because she believes he will be a famous movie director one day. Unfortunately, he is a loser and spends time playing video games and chasing younger women. She walks out and he has to face a new reality.
29. Dasepo Naughty Girls
This is the most bizarre movie I have ever seen. It's about a high school where the students regularly have sex and their activity is praised. I've never seen the movie 'Austin Powers' but this is the Korean take on that type of movie, from what I've been told. I've also heard it's much crazier than Austin Powers. This movie would do exceptionally well in American theaters, since it makes no sense at all. The reason why I consider it good is because it is very shocking - it is not possible to be bored while watching this.
