I think every animal in the roddent family does, not sure why, it can't really be to protect their spawn

Its the smell.

Same reason why you should wear gloves when putting up baby birds who have fallen down into their nest again. Humans apparently have a very distinct scent and this transfers over to the baby animal, who then is recognized as something other than it's offspring by the mother and a potential threat to the "real" offspring.

Yeah, nature is hilariously tragic. Mostly tragic in this case.

I get it with birds when you touch their eggs, but not with mamals, I wouldn't kill my kid just because he smelled bad.

To sums things up: Someone I know got stopped by some kids, their father had killed their mother and she was laying in their car in the driveway, I arrived 10 minutes later and saw the dead person.. And the murderer

When I got there the paramedics and police had allready arrived so while my mom and my brother was comforting the woman we know I talked to a paramedic, we stayed there 20 - 30 minutes before we drove back home and didn't talk to each other untill the next day
