Inception

He has nothing to do with it spinning. He spins it in real life and it topples over, he spins it in a dream and it keeps on spinning. I dunno why you think that means he wants it to be a dream.

I agree that he uses her totem as a memento of her, but the totem works. If Cobb used Ariadne's or Arthur's totem they would work.

The point of a totem is that if, for example, Ariadne was the architect, she couldn't recreate Arthur's loaded dice because she's never felt its weight etc. As long as an architect doesn't touch your totem, it will work. The point of not letting anyone touch it is so it wont be touched by any potential architect.

Cobb's spinner will work even though it used to belong to Moll, especially since the only person who had touched it, Moll, is dead.

But they say earlier on in the film something like "Only you can fully work your Totem". Or something. Which means that because it isn't his Totem, it doesn't work properly. I can't describe it without the exact quote, but basically you can only properly use your Totem.

But what you're suggesting makes no sense. Why, exactly, wouldn't he be able to use it? It's not his original totem, no, but the original user is dead.

This is sci-fi, not fantasy. It's not like the top is bound to Moll's soul. :|

But only because you're the only one allowed to touch and feel the totem. The reason that only you can use it is because you're not supposed to give it to someone else.

Exactly. You're not supposed to give it to somebody else. And although Moll didn't give it to him, he basically has someone elses Totem, so it wouldn't work properly. He just thinks it works. Therefore what he thinks (subconciously) is a dream, has the Totem spin forever, and what he thinks is real has the Totem topple.

No offence but that makes no sense, and if it were true it'd derail the whole film :P I agree with Tyl again, it isn't bound to Moll's soul, and Arseface was right too.

You're making no sense at all. Moll is DEAD. The purpose of totems is that they ground you to what is real and not, and the way they work is that you're the only one who knows about that totem's physical properties. Just because it used to be Moll's doesn't mean it wouldn't work for him.

Moll was killed off before the movie even started.

...but how exactly would it derail the whole film?
Because at the end of the film it is left as a cliffhanger - is he in a dream or in reality - if the totem didn't work then the whole point of the film (Cobb getting back to his children) would have been ruined. The film closes on the totem, so if the totem didn't work then why would most of the film (including the final clip) be focused on it, if we know that it's bogus? Of course it works.

To be honest I think it's pretty clear he's dreaming, as his chidlren do exactly the same thing he last remembers them doing, not facing him and the girl running away. Therefore whether or not the Totem topples is basically irrelevant.

It's for effect, you know how it's a film and not reality?

It has been revealed that the final scene is in fact reality, as the spinning-top begins to violently wobble in the last couple of seconds. This wouldn't have happened if it was a dream, as in a dream the top will never stop spinning when left alone.

But the only reasons totems work is because only you are allowed to touch them. When Moll had it, Cobb wouldn't have been able to use it, because she wouldn't have let him feel it to know it's specifiv weight and contours, etc. Once she's dead and he is able to get to know the totem, then he can use it.

Just because it used to be Moll's doesn't mean it wouldn't work for him.

We've moved on from that Daniel.

Well we have one factor suggesting it's a dream, one suggesting it's reality. Again, the slight tremor of the Totem was for effect. That's the element of mystery in it.

seriously, this. if you watch the totem spinning in a dream where it isn't supposed to topple, its spinning is flawless. it doesn't so much as move while it's spinning... let alone wobble. if christopher nolan had wanted to make it a true cliff hanger he would have made it spin as flawlessly as it had been doing when it was for sure in a dream. it's a happy ending that you have to think about to realize.

trust me, i watched the movie on my new 1080p 55" tv on blu-ray. :cheez:

That's all just numbers to me.
