Is this really how the world views us?

On my XBL profile, I have it saying I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm not even in SF, I'm just about an hour long drive from it. Still, I've had way too many people on Live asking me if I'm gay just because I live around SF. Don't get me wrong, I support homosexuality and gay marriage all the way, so I fit into where I live in that aspect, but I'm still straight. And that's hardly what bothers me. It's the level of ignorance of all these people. I get that we have more gays and lesbians than anywhere else, but most people that live around here are still straight, just like everywhere else in the world.

So, people of ProjectEgo, I ask you, is this really how the world views us? When people hear "San Francisco", do they just immediately think "gay"?

Re: Is this really how the world views us?

EDIT:
Just remembered what state you're in.. Yeah California gives off a gay impression.

Re: Is this really how the world views us?

I don't view it that way, but I guess the world does. /=|
*Sigh*. I just hate ignorance. -_-''

Re: Is this really how the world views us?

You're not gay?

Re: Is this really how the world views us?

When I hear about San Francisco I think of San Diego which makes me think of the navy which makes me think of sailors which makes me think of pirates which makes me think of butt pirates. Pretty painful and ridiculous chain to reach anything gay from San Francisco. (I'm in S.D. btw) Or you can go an alternate route and say SF stands for Sausage Fest and San Francisco.

Re: Is this really how the world views us?

Yeah, pretty much. I know how you feel, I'm in Utah so that automatically makes me a Mormon. I'm not. Utah has about the same religious to non-religious ratio as any other place, the only difference is that the majority of the religious are Mormons. Still, I can hardly ever play online without some prick yelling "hey, lets all gang up on the Mormon!"

Re: Is this really how the world views us?

I generally think hippies, and Haight-Ashbury, when I think of SF, then I think Mythbusters, then that episode of South Park where Kyle's family moves there, and then (for some reason) Charmed.

You sure they weren't just stirring you up?

And don't talk to the Australian about stereotypes. At least your's is an exaggeration (well, kind of) and not just blatant lies.

Re: Is this really how the world views us?

Pretty sure they were only making fun of you. (I was joking earlier if you also hadn't realised)

No one I've spoke to has ever thought "Homsexuality" when thinking of San Francisco or California.

When I think "San Francisco" I think of the bay and the zoo, and that it is a lovely city.

When I think "California" I think of Hollywood, Arnold Schwarzenegger and The OC.

Re: Is this really how the world views us?

I just think of earthquakes, car chases in films and lots of hills.

I don't really associate gayness with a particular location; just shows how out of the stereotype loop I am.

I should really make more of an effort...

Re: Is this really how the world views us?

Yeah, but you still do all that stuff, right?

Right?...:'(

Re: Is this really how the world views us?

Nah, mines cooler than all of yours'. I wrangle crocodiles whilst riding kangaroos, then I go home and have a shrimp barbeque on the beach.

I just think of that song by Scott McKenzie: "If you're going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair"...

You know the one.

Re: Is this really how the world views us?

I don't think of San Fran as being super gay or anything, but I've been there a couple times so I have an idea of what it's like in actuality as opposed to just the stereotype ... though I have to say it IS the only place where I've seen the window of a hardware store decorated in a rainbow theme. Seriously, I'm not making that up.

I know how you feel though. I live in New Jersey, which used to be considered a prefectly respectable place to live until Snookie and all her douchebag friends ruined it via "The Jersey Shore". I don't sleep in a tanning bed, wear "bling", or get arrested for being drunk on the beach at 9:00 AM. But whatever... it's totally stupid, but that's just people showing their ignorance I guess.

I saw her on Letterman yesterday... The best part about it was that she didn't know that everyone in the room hated her.

Re: Is this really how the world views us?

when i think of san francisco 3 things come to mind: gays, that big red bridge, and lots of hills.

but when i think of california: the governator, in n out burger, surfers, dogtown and z-boys... nothing about gays. just awesome stoner and beach culture.
