Look at it this way. You are more likely to find a kid smoking weed during school than alcohol. The only solution is weed bars really.
For your gateway drugs argument
For
"Weed ruins lives!"
So do alcohol and cigs.
All three will either psychologicaly or physically ruin you at different rates for different people..
Today cigarettes and alcohol in countries like Australia, are not a big deal when seeing kids smoking or/and drinking... However if a family member found you getting high matters would be different causing it to be a serious issue.. Parents (who think it is wrong) will question their siblings trust, and in an extreme case (if they think weed is very harmful) will kick the boy out. This happened to a friend of mine, who was called a junkie by his father.
Yes legalization will change many views when it happens, yet it will take a bit of time to change the majority.
"Weed is a gateway drug!"

Some countries/communities/families yes and some no. Similar to what i said before, some countries will view marijuana as a social drug, others won't.
There is a big difference between countries. Examples here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gateway_drug_theory#Study_of_Australian_Adolescents_.288_years.29
If marijuana was legalized in Australia, for some time it would still be considered an anti-social drug, and would be associated with harder drugs and failure (for example getting high during an exam.) However in America marijuana would be considered more of a social drug, straight off and would be associated with lets say positive things such as having fun (similar to how alcohol is viewed.)
Maybe in the future if it was legalized countries would view it differently, but you have to remember people will hold onto some beliefs.
I think if weed is well policed and has a suitable age limit it is safe
The point I'm trying to get at, from past experience, is that some cultures will smoke weed and not go to school or not work in school
As for other cultures they will be more appropriate and only smoke it at social events.

You have no idea. Half of my school was toasted today.
This is just an example (no offence Necromancer.) Legalizing it will cause some communities to view the drug differently. Like Necromancer's area might not view it as a rebellious thing and smoke at parties. Whilst other communities will treat the legalization as something that will cross off all the bad effects of marijuana and smoke it often.
Despite all this anti-legalization points i am still with legalization and as i stated before Diablo

. I still think it should be legalized since its pros out way its cons and that in many cases it is just as harmful as alcohol.
In some cases though, factors like how regular you smoke it and it's quality too.
Another point is that you are more likely to contact dealers that sell hard drugs through a stoner, than lets say someone who drinks alcohol at max in Australia (and other countries.) The reason being is that teens will view taking the drug as passing the line between social and anti-social drugs. This can create a split from people who want to not cross the line and those that don't.
At the moment Australia isn't ready yet, since the media will associate marijuana as uncommon and disruptive... Yet for other countries it will be viewed differently.
This is really the culture side to the issue, and not the medical or economic side (which has a potential to get USA out of recession.)
I think if the average middle-age population of a country view it as a street drug then the country is not ready.. Kids that have parents who don't view it as a street drug might not take it, but if they do they're more likely to be responsible with it and/or take it in a safe environment
