Personally I believe that having a life partner is more important to quality of life than being successful in a career.

I agree. Partners are a lot more fun. Oh wait, did you mean only one? Oh no no, that wouldn't work. I'd need to switch it up every so often. xD

Re: I've done it.

Congrats, Arseface, (that's so funny to say/type), on finishing school. It really is a great accomplishment.

As far as the other stuff goes, I have a college education, I owe almost $20,000 in loans and I am considering going back just so I can put off repayment of said loans. I have a degree and yet I can't find a job...of course, Im not exactly looking...but I have submitted resumes and applications and have had no success. I didn't get a job in a liquor store...over- qualified perhaps??

So what do I do all day? Take care of the kids, do some cleaning and cooking, and play video games....whilst my husband works.... I guess I have the best of both worlds? LOL

The point is, some of you may be wondering, life doesn't always end up the way we have planned. I went straight to college when I was 18, I was going to be an opera singer, travel the world...and then my mom died....and my life flipped upside down and I ended up not getting my degree for another 10 years.

Well done, you have just done what a million other faggots on 4chan do everyday. And yes you leaving this topic would be nice. We already have Pirate X, we don't need another troll who thinks that being sarcastic is making a contribution to a topic.

Yes, because this post is much better. You realize that we have gay forum members here and they just MIGHT be offended by the word "faggot"?

And congratulations Arseface! Good to know that you are actually preparing for the rest of your life. Most of the people I know think they are just going to flounder around for the rest of their life and be totally fine.

EDIT: Wow. I didn't see that there was a second page.

Re: I've done it.

Thanks to everyone for their congrats, comments, etc

Can't you just sponge off other people for the rest of your life? :)

But who do those people sponge off? WHERE DOES IT END!??!

I keep getting confused as to how old you are...

EDIT: Ah, I just checked. You're a year younger than me.

Congrats on graduating, only to immediately start again. College is... better than high school in that you have more control over what you do, worse in that it's a lot more work. Really. I swear. At least by the time you hit your second year.

Walker;344744 said:
EDIT2: And out of curiosity, what do you want to do in college?

I'm hoping to avoid that workload issue. I'm going to do Music Performance (hopefully) at the Victorian College of the Arts (Melbourne University). I'm hoping it'll pretty much just be guitar and drugs.

Walker;344744 said:
Now, I'm curious. Can you give me a quick rundown on Australia's school system? F'rinstance, why are you graduating in what would be the middle of the year for me? Why do you seem to be graduating a year and a half after someone a year young than me over here? Are they the same reason?

Our school terms are pretty much inverted. You have your summer holidays in July and August, and start the school term in September (guess). We have ours in December and January, and start our term in February.

Adulthood is knocking on the door, my advice is to bolt that door.

Being young and carefree in school is the best part of your life. Exams suck and i hated them but growing up and having responsibilities is a royal pain in the ass.

The job I'm hoping to get in the long term isn't your typical 9-5 job, so I'll still be able to sleep till noon, party all night, etc. I want to be a session musician.

I've heard stories of people taking out student loans in University and then buggering off abroad with the money. That could be fun, until you come back to the UK.

That's not the way it works over here. There are certain courses which are supported by the government, and they pay your fee directly. You get a little file in the Tax Office, and you pay them back automatically once you start real work.

Live in our house then - it's pretty much how our world works. Occasionally I might do something vaguely grown-uppy like cook food or wash some clothes, but on the whole I play games. Happy face...

I hope that's a genuine invitation..... :D

I'm sorry to hear that, but you have to start out with some sort of plan, right?

Yeah, cheers. Knowing me, though, I'll bugger the whole thing up anyway.

Re: I've done it.

Arseface... jeeze, and here I was, just getting to respect you, and then I find out you want to be a music major. Jeeze, man, what do you think you're goin to do with that? You think you can actually make money that way?*

*No, I'm not being serious. I'll admit that I want to be an engineering major, and no, I don't see much point in an art major personally, but I have no musical or artistic talent. So [shrugs]. On the other hand, I AM trying to get a double-major in English with a creative writing emphasis, so I can't really talk.

And oh, yeah, that's right. Seasons are switched down there, aren't they? Makes sense...

Hey, don't knock it. It's pretty much the only thing I'm good at/have interest in. And if you're good, then you pretty much rake in the money as a session player. That's not to mention the royalties.

Re: I've done it.

despite what you may think, being a music major can be a lot more work than other degrees...
my friend is a piano major at Temple University...and it is a LOT of work. It usually entails music theory until you've mastered every concept and learning to play multiple musical instruments.

in one respect, it is a lot of work. on the flip side though, i've never seen my friend happier than studying what he is now.

If you have a definite interest in it, i'm sure you will immensely enjoy studying music :D

I would argue that point. I've listened to English majors bragging about how much work being an English major is, "oh, engineering isn't anything special." I'm not even an engineering major yet, just taking the gateway requirements. I'm taking a full English courseload (more than that, if you count the creative writing seminar I'm taking). My math and physics to get admitted to engineering requires eight times as much studying, a ridiculous amount more homework, and are generally a stone-cold bitch.

That might be because UMD is... let's say a fairly hardcore engineering school and they're trying to get rid of the people who can't handle it, but still.

I'll admit, I've never taken any music major courses. But I HAVE heard English majors and music majors talking the exact same damn way. Sure, it's probably some kinda logical fallacy, but... And no, I'm not saying that a music major is neccesarily easy. But it's definitely not more work than engineering.

What's a "session player?"

A guy who get's hired to play guitar (in my case) on records, or at live performances. It's like being a mercenary, but with music.

I don't think it's more work, as such, but a different sort of work. In engineering, it's alot of writing, calculations, measurements, etc. That can be (or would be for me, at least) very tedious, making the workload seem like more.

Music is still fairly intensive training. You have to not only acquire knowledge of the music theory, of which there is alot, but you also have to train your body to be able to play your instrument, and particularly your ear to recognise pitches, rhythms, etc. It's alot of practice.

That being said, I really hate people who try to make their lives seem bad to try and get sympathy from people.

"Oh, my advanced medicine course is a 20 year course, and I have to write a 1000 page paper on the hairs of the choclea by tomorrow. Woe was me."

You picked that course, buddy. Your problem.

You are right, you should start out with a plan...I was directing all that more towards the others who were arguing about how school was worthless or working was worthless and that people should stay home and play video games all the time.

I think a music major is fantastic. There are a lot of options with a music major. I think some people see music and think of being a rock star or something like that and don't think about all the other possibilities.
