Jewish-Americans?

I was just hitting up some famous persons on Wikipedia when I came upon this term.

What... the... fudge?

Is Jewish a nationality now? You've got your African-Americans and your Italian-Americans... but you aint got Muslim-Americans or even Christian-Americans.

It makes no sense... Now, I realize that you naturally call Jewish people in America "Jewish Americans" but that "-" puts the term "Jewish-Americans" in with the others.... Insanity!

I hate political correctness, it's so pointless. It's the reason that the world is in so much **** now. Everything is deemed as "hate speech" even if it's just expressing an opinion.

My black friend gets called African-American all the time.
He gets ****ed off, since him, his mother, his father, and the last 4 generations of his family are all British...
I love him and his hatred of political correctness.

Jewish is not just a religion. Jews are an ethnic group that is as unique as any nationality. It is a cultural group, just as 'Asian Americans' are. Asian is not a nationality.
I do agree that the level of political correctness is way too high.

I've never actually heard or read the term "Asian-American", to be honest.

I still find the term Jewish-American to be very strange. Shouldn't you find out what sort of cultural/ethnic group everyone else is from? Shouldn't "African-Americans" be "Zulu-Americans" or somesuch...

Also, isn't Africa as much a continent (and not a country) as Asia?

since when did the word "black" become so offensive? most "African-Americans" are not African at all. they were born and raised in America as were their parents and several generations befor them. Im white, what am I, a "European-American"?

Polical correctness is a load of crap. Black people are black, white people are white, Jewish people are Jewish, Asian people are Asian. Nothing special, nothing to get excited or offended about. Their all just humans and their skin color is just genetics.

"Jewish-Americans" is a new one for me though. What the heck is so wrong with just describing a person as "Jewish"?

Besides, the majority of the time if you discribe a person as "black" its not the black person that gets mad, but the politicly correct white person whos felt guilty ever since high school history class.

Latin/Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, African Americans and who knows what else. If they are american citizens they should all be called simply, americans. Someone decided we should compartmentalize everyone and they were persistent enough to make it happen. It is really stupid.

Yeah, as I said, up here you're either a Swede or *insert nationality*. I too am perplex as to why exactly you do use that *X/Y-American* system.

As for Asian people getting offended when you get it wrong - the day you can tell me as a Swede apart from Danes and Norwegians, that's the day I'll be sure to learn to tell the difference between a Korean and a Japanese person. :rolleyes:

I cant help but notice that white people are the ones who get called Americans. Everyone else seems to get the African/Asian/Jewish/whatever Americans rutine. I think the politicly correct people who take the time to distinguish race and add "American" to it are really just closet racists. this " - American" crap is just a mask.

The politically correct term for white americans would be "European-Americans". Heck, I think I'm gonna try and use that as often as I can. You know, to not look like some ignorant and politically incorrect slob!

They call it "politicly correct" but there isnt anything correct about it. A white person born in Africa who then moves to America and passes the requirements to become a citizen of America is an "African-American". A black person born in America is an American. I have met many black people, but I have never met an "African-American". All the black people Iv met are Americans.

oh, I just though of something, what would these politicly correct people call a black African in Africa? what about a white African in Africa?

Like I said before, its closet racisim. They refer to them as "X- (nationality)" and while they might not hate them, they treat them differently then they would people of their own race. taking the time to distinguish between race implies that they care, and that race matters to them, ergo - racist.

thats not all of them, but you get the idea.

Some people cant put history behind them and are still overy sensitive to some words. This "African-American" garbage is sort of pretending not to be pretending that sertian events never happened, and that their sorry those things happened. things that they themselves had nothing to do with but they still feel guilty. Refering to someones race as "black" is not the same as tieing them to a wood post, ripping thier shirt off, and whipping them while you ask what their name is. So relax, stop feeling guilty for things you had nothing to do with and call your black friend whatever they would prefer you to call them.
