Jobs?

Well guys, you'd think a strapping, handsome young man such as myself wouldn't have any trouble getting a job, but I'm actually having a hard time getting a job. I've got debts to pay, things that need doing, places that need going, all of which costs money. I've applied for various places, but haven't heard back. I don't want to do a ****ty, easy telemarketing job, or anything like that, but I want to do something I'll like. Something music related, or computer related.

I don't know why I'm telling you guys this... maybe for advice?

Re: Jobs?

Lower your standards, man. I used to have standards, high friggin' standards. But now I sit answering calls at a tech support department of a phone company...

Re: Jobs?

Make videos for Youtube of you playing music, if you get enough subscribers you'll get a share of the ad revenue.

Fred earns 5 figures a year, and he's 16 years old.

See, I could do that, but I don't know where to look for jobs like that.

I tried posting this just a second ago but it didn't go through. Hard refresh and I still don't see my post. So I'm hoping that it isn't there and that this isn't a duplicate post.

I have to say that I am extremely and unbelievably lucky as far as employment goes. I am not formally trained, I am not formally educated, I make way more than anyone my age should get paid and I hardly do any real work, and I am enjoying it. As I said, I'm lucky.

But before that, it was all crap jobs. I worked at a convenience store that was constantly robbed. I did telemarketing for two days, I was fired for telling a customer to... do something naughty with his mother, so to speak. I painted houses, I shoveled manure, I did a lot of crappy jobs. Later, I would get into phlebotomy, and that was the best choice I ever made. The work and pay was terrible, but then the luck kicked in and set into place a series of events that has led me to where I'm at now.

Everyone starts at the bottom of the ladder. Even if you have gone through extended formal education and training, even if you have skills, the only way to skip these particularly bad jobs is to have a silver spoon stuck in your mouth, and even then you have to do some degree of crap work, like fetching coffee and making copies and licking envelopes.

I know I have to start at the bottom of the ladder and everything, but all I'm after is something moderately easy to do, and something where I can maintain a microcosm of dignity.

Yeah, I'm not that good, though. :(

Thanks for responding, guys.

Arseface? Is that you?

:3

All I can recommend is not to put your standards too high. This if your first job, and any experience - no matter where it is - is invaluable. If you can find anything, go with it.

Confidence is everything - be confident and the world is your playground.

Re: Jobs?

Confidence. If you want it, make sure you get it.
Low standards. Start at Kroger if you have to.
Keep a kind but strong face, tell them what they want to hear and phone call them every two or three days.

Re: Jobs?

If you need money you will accept any job that comes your way. Just because you get a job doesnt mean you are stuck with it for life. Just stick to it long enough to get some more experience to bulk up your CV so you will be more likely to be employed by someone else. Just do it to get some financial stability for a while. I went to college hoping to get a job involving computers i had 4 jobs in 2 years and then went unemployed for 10 months. Pretty disheartening being turned down for jobs time and time again due to lack of experience.

I ended up helping out at the same company ive worked for now for nearly 7 years. Its a pretty boring job and doesnt tax my brain as id like but it pays well and is local. In process of setting up my own business with my girlfriend now and the money ive got from this job is currently funding it. Bottom line is stick it out and take whatever you can for the experience and cash to begin with.

Re: Jobs?

step 1: get a job
step 2: get a better job

the first one is just a stepping stone, i worked in a crappy privately owned hardware store...and i hated it. but that opened up the window for more jobs that would never have gotten as an entry level worker.

Re: Jobs?

I've done everything from cleaning toilets to managing a company. It's not any less dignified to be doing what many would see as "menial" work - if it pays the bills and gets you on the way to something else, it's worth it. It's all about your attitude towards your work, not necessarily the job itself. I've worked in some high-paying establishments and been miserable there and then I've done jobs most people would turn their noses up at and really enjoyed it.

Apply for things you may not usually go for and see what happens - it could surprise you and pay the bills whilst in your spare time you can concentrate on getting to where you want to be on a more permanent level.

Re: Jobs?

Or you could be like me and get employed without being paid for it. I haven't had a paying job since I was about 18...I think I'm getting something wrong here...

Re: Jobs?

I am currently awaiting a call from Kroger for my first job, I am waiting until tomorrow and then I am going to spam them with calls everyday so they believe I am exciting and willing to work. (That is how My dad got it years ago, that is how my friend got it.) Hoping so much to get a job, I need the independent cash.

Re: Jobs?

Ok, so I've adjusted my standards appropriately. Now all I need to do is find something part
time and close to school... I guess you guys can't help me there, though.

Thats gotten me into a lot of trouble in the past. Of course my motivations were different... VERY diff- you know what forget I said anything. Seriously though, I'm 17 and I plan on working around the Rally races that take place here in Pennsylvania. I'll start by volunteering, then if they like me they'll hire me. I understand you most likely don't have the time for something like this, but it's a good way to get yourself noticed.

Confidence doesn't mean arrogance.
