Lemme bitch.

Redwall is frigging hard work to get into for a set of books supposedly marketed at kids. Even as a TV series it was...icky.

I guess it all comes down to what your cousin allows - if she wants more Christian style kids books then I can get you a whole list of non-vomit-inducing titles to start with. I run a children's library, after all...

I never tried all that hard myself.

Nah. Part of what irritated me here was the hypocrisy. She had no problem with any of the other fantasy books I mentioned. Just Harry Potter.

And since when/in what capacity do you run a kid's library?

Wow. I was... 4.

I was ten. Fifth grade. But I never heard about Cirque du Freak until I was thirteen or so.

And I just realized that you're younger than my youngest sister, which is really depressing.

Do I get points for suggesting Deltora Quest (first ten or so books)? I read it when I was about ten, and I really liked it.

Two things - scratch what I said before, I was 3, my birthday's not till the end of the year.

And apologies for being born late.

I'm company director of an online library for blind/visually impaired/print disabled people (have been for almost 4 years now) and I head the children's library. It's not that big yet but we tend to get a lot of sets of titles and I specialise in the under 15's. It's all digital and free and blah blah blah - I don't even get paid. In fact, I seem to specialise in getting unpaid jobs

Yeah, I liked them, too. So did my sister. We gave him the entire series when he was sevenish. And no, my cousin didn't have a problem THAT fantasy series, either.

Don't feel sorry. You're actually two years younger than my youngest sister. It just reminds me how old she'd be now, that I'm sitting here talking to you and you're younger than she was.

Cooool. Have you heard of http://www.baen.com/library/]the Baen Free Library?[/url] They're a publisher, release some of their books free online. I think that somewhere on that site they mention something about releasing more for the hearing impaired or... something, I don't know.

No, not heard of them. I know there is an American (I think?) library doing pretty much what we do, but we're the only ones in the UK and Europe - the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) absolutely HATE us but aside from the politics and backstabbing, it's a good job. I just don't make moneez :(

Yeah, their primary purpose is free advertising and e-publishing/intellectual property idealism rather than helping blind people or whathaveyou.

Why does the RNIB hate you? Because you invade their dominion, or what?

well you can never go wrong with the Moomin books.

Never heard of them. I would google the **** out of that, but why don't you enlighten me?

Never heard of them. I would google the s*** out of that, but why don't you enlighten me?

I can't be arsed to type a response, much less type that into Google and click Search.

Well, the Moomin books are written by a Finnish author Tove Jansson. Admittedly, I have never read any of the books myself, but one of the (japanese) animated series based on the books was one of my childhood favorites and even today hasn't lost its touch.

I'll just quote wikipedia on what makes the books so great:
"The Moomin stories have a very humane message. The books have caprices and utterances which ponder life and ways of the world. Snufkin comments on freedom: "One can never be entirely free, if one admires someone else too much." Little My expresses possession: "Possession means worries and luggage bags one has to drag along."

I've always regarded children's books, which can be a very good read to adults as well, one of the best "genres" of them all.

Because we do what they haven't figured out yet and we don't charge for it like they would. They are more of a business now than a charity - focus is on profits, not helping people. They tried to take us to court a bunch of times for what can only be summarised as a temper tantrum on their part. Needless to say, they've never been able to make anything stick. Charity can actually get very cut-throat, which is mental - if one group found a cure for AIDS or cancer, you can bet other groups supporting the same cause would be really hacked off that they didn't figure it out first. And the RNIB hate that we are offering "their" people free stuff, without asking for subscriptions, donations or any sort of advertising/endorsement. We don't ask for a thing from the people we help and this irritates the RNIB no end

Also, I love the Moomins. But their TV show freaks me out.

Tove Jansson is a Swedish-Finnish author actually. One of the few Finns us Swedes actually want to be associated with! And yeah, they're creepy as hell. That black ghost thingy, which I don't know the English name for, was the scourge of my childhood. And many others, apparently, when you ask around... *Shivers*

I know the thing you mean - it used to terrify me and it still does...The Groke, I think it's called.

Jessica watched it on DVD the other day and was like "mum, you're so pathetic. This isn't scary at all".

Says the child who has nightmares about the Grinch...
