Microsoft: XBL Moderator was not Out of Line

A video, depicting an Xbox Live moderator (Gamertag: The Pro) banning an Xbox Live gamer during an online match of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, has caught the attention of Microsoft since its posting on YouTube yesterday. Entitled "The Pro : XBOX Live Moderator Abuses His Power," the carefully edited video, which can be viewed after the break, attempts to portray a "corrupt" moderator mercilessly wielding his banhammer and perhaps abusing his authority.

Microsoft's Major Nelson quickly made note of the production on his Twitter account, and passed the video off to Stephen Toulouse, director of Xbox Live policy and enforcement, who tweeted several comments of his own. Toulouse noted that The Pro was "policing" Modern Warfare 2 modding, which can result in an Xbox Live Gold account suspension (banning a user from online play) or a complete console ban (rendering Xbox Live inaccessible).

In a statement to Joystiq, Toulouse said, "The player behavior in question and subsequent interaction with the moderator violated the Xbox Live Terms of Use and Code of Conduct. The Xbox Live moderator followed protocol and, while he regrets his tone, the video was heavily edited to omit the inappropriate behavior and we fully support the moderator's decision to take action against the offending players."

I support The Pro, he and I actually met in game once. lol He plays Borderlands.

The Pro sounds like a good man, he was totally just. Some people just can't take rules I guess; it wasn't like he banned them for killing him too much.

Well deserved. Smart mouthed little prick got what was coming to him although I get the feeling it was a stunt just to get banned on purpose and try to put 'The Pro' in a bad light. I thought he handled it pretty well tbh.

I feel sorry for moderators. It's a hard job, and you either do it and come off as a Nazi or don't do it and come off as an incompetent prick, and it's hard knowing when to do what sometimes. But he did the right thing, antagonizing the moderator is not a prudent thing to do.

I'm kinda neutral on this. The Pro obviously sounded really wound up by the trolling and baiting and it's understandable but someone in that position of authority shouldn't really throw his weight around and hurl threats so publicly. I dunno.

That was a little harsh. Pricks like that make me went to sell Modern Warfare 2, really. Love the game, hate the community.

I wish they would bring back Party Chat for team deathmatch games. I end up muting everyone except my friends as soon as the games start. Or playing big team games which allow Party Chat but can huge lag in most cases.

That's exactly what I do.

They brought it in for communication but no one does in Team Deathmatch. Search and Destroy and other objective based games, I can understand but mindlessly running around shooting everyone doesn't really need 'communication' does it? Plus, it's full of six year olds that think that having the GT "Pro Skillaz" makes them cool and good at the game.

I dont understand what positive thing could come out of banning it in Team Deathmatch but as you said i could understand it in S&D. Surely Party/Team chat was designed specifically for gamemodes like Team Deathmatch .

A monument has been raised for The Pro. We should build a statue in honor of Tsuyu. It will be modeled after Atlas holding the world, only instead of a globe it will have boobs. It's symbolic.
