Yeah. He does explain why he killed John. Just not in the Strangers Task. You pick up little bits throughout the story and in a newspaper when you're Jack.

He basically was ordered to take out all of the gang members, including John. But he knew John was a changed man and would do anything for his family so he made him do all the dirty work for him. Until the end, when there was only one left, it was plain sailing for him.

He earned medals and congratulations from top people. He wanted to be a hero. That's why he did it.

What an basterd, I oughta tie him up, cut im a little bit, bring him up north, throw him off my horse, pour bait all over him, and watch the bears almost maul him. I will kill the bears just so he thinkns I'm saving him, then I will take him to the train tracks and watch him explode. I will also take him there by means of pulling him along the ground.

What about the other Lawman? The one dressed in black? Do you kill him too?

Since he doesn't have anything to do with Marstons murder, no. He was just simply a follower. He even helped you at one point so killing him would be pointless.

He was still a b*stard as well.
