Signature limits & Scrolling

I think this matter should be dealt with and a final word should be put. There should be reasonable limits to signatures which could reach the ridiculous levels or if people want to keep a lot of stuff into their signatures then the signatures should be scroll-able.

If neither of these things is available then an option "hide signatures" Should be available to every member.

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

I am absolutely not against anything, beside giant signatures that I am forced to scroll through, such as prior to the implementation of the scroll feature. I've also suggested some things recently:

That said, there is the possibility of writing a piece of code for the forum which sets a static width for the entire template hook ($template_hook[signature_start]). But as long as the administrators wish it this way, I'm all fine with it myself. I'm happy enough to be a part of ProjectEgo, and that's more than sufficient.

Yes. In-fact, everything is possible as long as you know what you're doing. For instance, let's say we want to restrict free use of signatures to certain usergroups (assuming there is more than one), you'd want to add an if conditional around the code which defines the scrolling area in the signature, e.g.:
Code:
<if condition="in_array($post['usergroupid'], array(x,x,x))">code for the groups that need the scrolling bar<else />those who 'deserve' free use of the signature feature.</if>
Of course, vBulletin is a template-based system, meaning that certain variables, such as $post, aren't declared globally, and thus, can be used in certain templates, while these can't be used in certain others. $post['usergroupid'] is a mere example, as $post most likely won't work in signature_start; could easily redefine $post in a similar way for signatures specifically, through use of a written plug-in, or simply in the template itself.

Yes, as said, everything is possible. The only difference is the amount of time it would take to implement it. Not that it's overly complicated; just the amount of writing. It shouldn't be very hard; a possible way could be to add a field which acts as user profile field, except it doesn't actually serve as one. Then, write some code which checks the status of the checkbox (e.g. in User Options, found in UserCP). If it's enabled, do action X. If not, then do action Y.

Perhaps one of the administrators could take one of these suggestions into account. At least, if it's an interesting idea after all.

My vote will be the first: yes, along with options if people prefer.

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

I much preferred it when there were no limitations, but wasn't there an option to block? I don't know why limitations were put on when we have the block sigs & avatar option in control panel.

If you want to see sigs, but don't want massive sigs, can't we have another option in the control panel for turning limited sigs on and off?

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

Block signatures is global. Unless you don't want to see any signature at all, it's not a good option.

^ This.

People should be able to decide if their individual account puts a limit on sigs; otherwise, leave it as is.

In what context do you mean such? That they enable or disable a checkbox in User Options which disabled viewing of userids that exceed YYxZZpx dimension?

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

Why is everyone complaining? the new signature limits are more than enough and you can fit a decent standard size signature in. The only people who want it changed are those who have huge signatures i vote keep the scroll bar.

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

.. I liked it a lot better with the scroll bars. I don't mind looking at other people's signatures, but not when they're oversized images that I have to do extra scrolling through. It is rather annoying.

I do like Ojima's suggestions, hopefully Steve will look into it so everyone can be happy with this.

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

I'm actually not bothered at all. Each choice has it's ups and downs so either way, people are still going to complain.

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

At the Resident evil Forums I know there's a limit. Your siggy can only be like 500X255 or something. And that includes all of it, not just the one image you have. And my siggy was put in spoilers. :P I know other forums have automatic Resizing. And Stuff, but I think the scrollbar approach is the best choice out of all of them honestly.

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

it's somewhat irritating for me. i like my posts to look sexy and stylish, and that damn scroll bar is like throwing overalls on my clubbing outfit. it just looks... unattractive. how am i ever going to find a cute wife for my fable 3 hero when my signature looks like THAT??
...
on a more sensible note, it would be nice to have an option to disable them, so that those of us who prefer to have a longer loading time for a sexier display can have that option if you want.
it's like picking out a car.
do you want the sensible honda civic that will last you for the next 20 years?
or do you want the sexy lambroghini that will look and drive awesome, but drive your insurance through the roof?

personally, i've got some extra bandwidth in my pocket. i want the lambo.
:)

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

I personally don't like the scrolling thing and limit, but oh well. I like the site no matter. Vote cast.

Certainly. If it is to be re-implemented, it'd be nice to not include the ______ part (the splitter between signature and post) in the scrolling area, but keep it above so it remains at a static location. Otherwise, it scrolls out of sight and it'll be hard to distinguish post from signature if someone writes a lap of text and has a big signature, too.

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

If you haven't noticed the scrollbar is back, but the limit has been increased.

Good choice in my opinion.

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

Lol, me sig was is now just large enough that it needs a scroll bar... Damn it!

ANYWAY
On topic: I think it's good that we shouldn't have to scroll so long (Although, we can also click'n'hold the scroll bar... duh) to find the thing we want. But the scrolling sigs did annoy me...

I just concur with the stuff that has been said about making a solution in the middle.
(And damn it, why isn't the limit just one pixel more. xD. It's just a 600x250 image and a spoiler. =|. Oh well...)

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

"Just" 250px in height? Be happy! As I've mentioned in the past: some forums I'm at only allow 160px height. Yet everybody is happy. Be happy with almost twice as much. ;)

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

Does my sig get scrollified?

EDIT: Damnit.

EDIT2: Ok, I can live with that. I Still don't like it.
