And how long before it needs just one pixel more than that? And then another pixel? I'm actually glad you posted, you are the perfect example of the types of users that have absolutely no respect for screen real estate. Let's look in your signature, shall we?

Nice signature image, 600x240, 141983 bytes.

Open the spoiler and, hey! Two more spoilers.
Open the first sub-spoiler, and wow that's big. Nice image, 888x1114, 448005 bytes. And then you have some text associated with the image. You know, my screen is 1280x1024.
Open the second sub-spoiler and count'em one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, holy crap eight YouTube videos, each at 425x344 pixels.

Add onto that padding for the spoilers. Now, let's just say that the scrollbar wasn't there, and let's say that images aren't scaled down (in fact, that obscenely large image is hardly scaled down at all), and then let's say someone decides to open those spoilers. With account to the rest of your post, you leave a footprint roughly 5000 pixels tall and stretch the page to width-breaking proportions. And I kill people when I think of such things.

I'd be pleased if the entirety of all signatures was limited to one image and one line of text that altogether does not exceed 500x100 pixels. Because that's appropriate. I'd even accept all of your hate mail, and reply to it all even (hope you like goatse). It bothers me that very few people here, if anyone at all, understands that these signatures are so ****ing obscene in their footprints that it's to the point that it's... I need to invent a new word, something that encompasses all profane words and exponentially intensifies them.
Well said, but in more and 'stronger' words than I could. But wholeheartedly agreed to that. Not to mention, signatures are overrated, and people basically think that having a big signature is more important than good posts. That's my main issue with things like these.

Also to the admins, there is a plug-in available on vBulletin.org which uses js, lightbox and some other things that auto-scale images down if given dimension is exceeded. It might be of very good use, and in the end, won't require any other measures, e.g. scroll.

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

The scrollbar is very lenient compared to what a lot of you deserve. You should be thankful that the rule isn't just "Don't make your signature f***ing huge" and the admins are doing something to compensate for it when really they should just be making people delete their massive signatures.

I used to be there, I used to have an absolutely massive signature. It's a good thing I changed it. If you have the scrollbar, your signature is too big. No exceptions.

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

The truth is, bar for either me or DD deciding otherwise, we're almost certainly moving over to a new forum solution. Any fixes I implement between then and now would only be temporary.

I don't like massive signatures, but I realise others do not feel the same. The fixed-height scrollbar approach was a quick fix I decided to add during one of the cutscenes of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. I've removed the scrollbar - now, if your signature area is too large, the portion which would normally be reserved for the scrollbar will just be invisible.

The current maximum height of signatures is 300px - way bigger than any reasonable user should ever require. The signature area on your profile page has no restrictions whatsoever, your full unedited signature will be displayed there.

I thought you had plans to implement XF on your website, but not PE. Sounds like an interesting idea. I wonder how it'll turn out.

Edit: or will it be IPB?

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

What... is this?? Just slicing off the bottom of oversized signatures? I prefered it with the scrollbar now...

Eheh, so you actually believe that I originally woudln't put all that stuff in spoiler tags? I realized that stuff was very large, so I put them in spoiler tags before the limit was here...

Also, I can live with it. Just like some other people. It's just not to my preferences. I'm not asking Steve to give me one more pixel. In fact, don't do it! Stick to your principles; to what you think is best. It will disappoint me slightly, that I get a scroll bar, but I can live with it. ;)

Oh hell, I'll just put my whole sig in spoilers. Tch... >_>

EDIT: Hm, it appears it has changed so that we can get 300 px... So now it fits perfectly. O_o'
Oh well...

well, i am. steve, if i don't get 301 pixels pronto there's gonna be trouble.
THAT'S RIGHT
i'm gonna a massive signature 301 in height, and if i'm not accomidated in signature space, there will be hell to pay. namely i'll be forced resize it to be 300 pixels, and NOBODY wants that.

these are my demands, i eagerly await your inevitable cave in, given the grave consequences at hand.

Then get a proportionate sig, I like saying this phrase: "The internet is a Dictatorship, not a democracy." You can have it your way up until the point the owner of the website wants it different, he pays for this place/runs it, he gets dibs.

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

But a proportionate sig is tiny! I appreciate my sigs are often too big, and I do try to make them smaller, but that Inbetweeners picture for a start is the smallest one I can find...

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

Then perhaps try and make your own signature or so? Not finding the right picture of a certain dimension isn't an excuse to be an exception to the limits.

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

Um, correct me if I'm wrong but there already IS an option to not view signatures and images if it's such a ball-ache. I don't use this so I can monitor sigs to ensure no one is doing anything they shouldn't (such as spammers linking to certain sites etc) - but the option is there in the UserCP.

Unless this is just privy to those who are gold? Or staff? Someone can check this for me, if you like.

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

Yes, this feature is available to all members, regardless of usergroup (spare COPPA, banned and the likes). To those who are interested: User CP -> User Options -> Show Signatures / Show Avatars / Show Images; disable whichever you want, and save changes.

Re: Signature limits & Scrolling

Cool. So nobody should have an issue then, yes?

Good.
