The Funtastic World of Skin Conditions!

Aside from my crude and obvious sarcasm in the title, this is a pretty serious thread for me. I don't know about you people but I've got my fair share of horrible skin condition stories (most fun one is about a flesh-eating bacteria, but I'll save that one for special request seeing as it's awful.)
Mostly, I'm hoping that we could connect a bit and maybe share helpful tips and remedies for dealing with conditions.
In case you're wondering (which I know you all are), I've had eczema all my life and about ten years ago I was also diagnosed with psoriasis. It's horrible, especially since the weather's getting warmer and my skin is getting more sensitive. Does anyone have anything else they'd like to share? I could really use some kind of remedy or something, this is terrible. >.o

Eczema.. Is that said like.. EX Ma? Haha. I don't know how its seplt so it might be that word..

I don't have any conditions of any sort or have fevers.. or allergic to anything. So im pretty perfect. :D

Just get a really good Immune System, Which means you will have to hurt yourself during it. If you have a good Immune system then it'll fight off all the nasty's!

Actually, having psoriasis means that I have an overactive immune system since it's basically my skin pointlessly replacing itself constantly. It causes a weird plate-like effect on my elbow and I have to use immuno-suppressant creams and stuff to keep it at bay. I have like an idiot immune system, very stong, but just concentrating on a stupid task.

Now for the flesh eating bacteria:
It was last year, I believe, yes definitely actually because I remember it was back when I was working at my old job. Okay anyway, it started with my sister. She, like me, is victim to a few annoying skin conditions and was complaining about these sores she was developing on her arms and legs. We thought maybe it was just eczema acting up but when I and my brother and other sister started getting the same sores, we went to the doctor and were diagnosed with a mild flesh-eating bacteria. It was awful, it was itchy and burning and I had to cover up completely in the middle of May. The grossest part was that before I knew what was wrong with me, I went to work and God knows how many people I infected while I was making their coffee and sandwiches. >.o
I'm just happy that it was easily cured, except that my sister who started it all had to go to the hospital for a couple days because the medicine wasn't taking with her. Last year was an interesting one, for sure.

I thought sunlight helped with psoriasis? My ex had it on his arms from time to time and his doctor would tell him to sunbathe (with caution, obviously) as much as possible to help ease the symptoms and heal up quicker. This isn't good for everyone though because it can make it worse in some cases, so this could be something of a pointless suggestion.

Something Diprobase might work or Doublebase - they are essentially just emollients but Doublebase is waterproof so you can put it on before showering or swimming etc and it doesn't wash off so your skin doesn't dry out. Also eases any itching and isn't greasy.

What has your doctor recommended?

Re: The Funtastic World of Skin Conditions!

^ I actually haven't been to a doctor about my skin in a while because the steroid cream that she prescribed really didn't help at all, and my medical insurance didn't want to cover anything else for me. I've just been using Cortisone and that's been working a little, mostly just on the eczema. The psoriasis is the killer for me, but I've managed to subside it to just my elbow.
The sunbathing is actually really interesting, I'll try it out today after my classes since it's gorgeous outside. I've never heard of Doublebase, where do they sell that?

Re: The Funtastic World of Skin Conditions!

I dont know to many because other than exema (Or whatever its spelled) and a rash on my belly button:

1. exema: Lotion, normal lotion, applied every day for two weeks and it left.
2. Rash, I tried a neosporn type thing, it failed, so a friend told me that honey heals alot, well the honey didn't get rid of it, but it sure did stop it from growing, I had to get a cream from the doctor, and after 8 doses of that its almost completely gone.

In any case the rash at day one was: (The '+' is my belly button the 'o' is the rash)

ooo +
oo

Day two (Neosporn)

oooooo
oooo+
oo

Day three (Neosporn)

oo o
oooooo
oooo+
oooooo

day 4 (honey)

oo o
oooooo
oooo+
oooooo

day 5 (honey)

oo o
oooooo
oooo+
oooooo

day 6 (honey)

oo o
oooooo
oooo+
oooooo

So honey stopped it but it didnt heal.

Like I say, sun might not help but it could be worth a try. Just use suncream, obviously, and if it feels like it's getting worse, just stop.

Steroid cream is teh suck - I've never found it to work and putting all those chemicals on your skin could maybe lead to either an intolerance or a resistance. Emollients are slightly better because they soothe and so diminish the effects, even if they don't remove them altogether. The less you fuss with your skin the better it will get.

Doublebase might be just a british thing - I'll see if there is a different trading name for it in America. It basically contains liquid paraffin which can be found in most aqueous creams/emollients you can buy at a drugstore if your medical insurance won't cover it. Something with salicylic acid in it could help too but that's something you'll want to talk over with a pharmacist or doctor first.

Other than the medical route, try upping your essential fatty acid intake (like oily fish, olive oil on salads etc) and increase the amount of fruit (but not citrus) and vegetables you eat. Cut down on sugar - that could help a bit - and avoid drinking (or at least too often) and rapid weight gain.

Try some Vitamin D cream if you can find some - the more vitamin D, the better (hence the sunlight/more veg options) as it helps with psoriasis specifically.

Re: The Funtastic World of Skin Conditions!

I suffer from the strangest thing: Whenever I get sweaty, my whole body starts to itch.

Its very annoying, since every attempt at working out ends with my not being able to stand the itch and giving up. I hate it, 'cause I'm getting pudgy and everyone thinks I'm lazy, not knowing the real reason I don't like exercise.

There are no visible symptoms or nothing (thankfully).

:'(

Re: The Funtastic World of Skin Conditions!

I have psoriasis, I've always had it. It doesn't really affect me, so it cant be affecting me very much.

I get dermatitis from time to time too, although its only rare. E45 works well, or so I'm told.

Re: The Funtastic World of Skin Conditions!

With my dermatitis I have to use a cocktail of things - Benadryl hand cream, Doublebase, E45 and sometimes Sudocrem. And then because I inevitably scratch till I bleed, lots and lots of plasters are required.

Re: The Funtastic World of Skin Conditions!

^That sucks :(

Be careful of that Swine Flu too, its been out breaking in Texas, Arizona, New York and Ohio so far and will be hitting others soon.

Re: The Funtastic World of Skin Conditions!

^I know, it is a terrible skin condition..

Re: The Funtastic World of Skin Conditions!

I really don't have any skin conditions other than having pinkish skin and can't tan. But I do have friends that have really bad dandruff and no matter what they do they can't fix it. Any suggestions?

Re: The Funtastic World of Skin Conditions!

Tea tree might help? It depends on the cause of the dandruff but shamppos and conditioners with Tea Tree oil in can help or you can use it in its essential form but in very very small doses.
