It shouldn't be a problem if they do it properly because it's a prequel of sorts - there shouldn't be endless references to the LOTR at all.I feel as though it's somewhat problematic that I haven't seen any of the Lord of the Rings movies...

Ahhh...I sees. Well if it helps, I hadn't read any of the LOTR books before seeing the films and had no trouble keeping up. And I'm the IQ equivalent of a 1 watt bulb. If the nerd in you prevails, wiki LOTR for the gist and then promptly forget it all because the Hobbit, as White Knight has already said, is in a different tone. One of my favourite stories as a child and Smaug is just brilliant...they'd better not screw him up in the film.Oh I'm not saying it would be problematic for seeing this movie (though I would have assumed so), I'm just saying it's problematic in general. I feel like a proper nerd need to have at least basic knowledge of Lord of the Rings, and I don't.

Stephen Fry is in it, so now i have to see it
I don't know. They ****ed me off so much. The dwarves in The Hobbit always put Gimli to shame when it came to awesomeness.
I'm fairly certain it will be a cinematic orgasm.
