The Limit of realism in game.

Theres all this talk about the diyng feature, but whats would be cool and not cool. If you die your dead, if your arm is sliced hard enough, it should fall off, as well as any other body part. Its a shame we cant be real as we wish with our games, then again the whole point is to be able to do things in a game that life does not permit without consequence. But we can only take it so far. I know this is kind of cut and dry, but any comments?
P.S. Im a future Game Designer- I think about this stuff.

Re: The Limit of realism in game.

If your arm was to fall off with every slice that could do it, it would mean reloading saves a lot.

They have to make games fun above all else and also so games involve a lot of realism there are some things that just cant be made realistic in games.

Re: The Limit of realism in game.

Mainly why I hate the Sims is because... duh, I don't play a game to copy real life - I want to do things I couldn't possible do otherwise!

I wanna ride inside giant robots smashing things up, I wanna use super punches and kicks to beat the crap out of the other player and I wanna take 5000 bullets and still be able to chainsaw that nasty Locust.

There is a limit to where realism starts to sap the enjoyment of a game instead of enhancing it. The scarring feature of Fable was all realistic and stuff - but also one of the first things people figured out how to stop through modding.

Re: The Limit of realism in game.

I know but what IM saying is that theres always that line we cant cross, or we think we cant. But if it were possible it would mean you would have to develope your combat skills before actually questing, even then you would have to be on your toes the whole game. Which would mean you really learned from it, then again there could be a sort of regeneration potion or something in the game to make it all better, like your arm would fall off then you pop the cork and your arms back, but that would be wierd. But yeah its all about the enjoyment, we love to see new things in games and in life in general, but anything is possible its called innovation. But Your right we play games because in life the things we did with a controller would kill us.

All comes down to the type of crowds that the games developers want to appeal to. They make games to make money and limiting the appeal to a certain crowd of gamers is likely to result in lower sales. Im all for realism to an extent but when games are overly realistic it can dampen the gaming experience.

Re: The Limit of realism in game.

kinda like between H3 and CoD4. ppl i know complain that H3 isnt as realistic as CoD4. but then i tell the idiots that H3 is a futuristic game set in like 2554 and ur a super soldier in a super suit. its not supposed to be realistic. and realism takes away from some games. and ill always prefer H3 over CoD

Re: The Limit of realism in game.

How can they say Halo 3 isn't realistic? Have they tried on a suit of Mjolnir armour? Are they genetically engineered super-humans? Have they had experience firing weapons such as the Needler or Brute Shot?

If not, I'd say they aren't qualified to say what is realistic or not in Halo 3.

Re: The Limit of realism in game.

i think thier just bumbed that H3 wasnt really as good as the hype promised. thier just looking for another excuse to look down on Halo. H3 is pretty realistic too. the thing that ppl complain about is that u jump far too high. answer = ur in a super suit. they also say that u dont die easily enough. answer = super suit (and have they played on legendary?). they all just gave me stupid reasons why H3 isnt realistic. i get into arguments about CoD4 vs H3 all the time.

Re: The Limit of realism in game.

Yes, it is impossible to tell if Halo 3 is realistic or not, 'cause those things don't exists in real life. Had it been a game where you bounced a ball off a wall you could tell if it was or was not realistic 'cause there you have a real life counterpart to compare physics and stuff.

People are dumb sometimes.

'People' are dumb ALL the time. An individual 'person' can be smart, but not 'people'.

I do know with over 3000. lines of conversation with the locals etc., this game seems as if it's realism will surpass tlc. I can't wait to go out and discover what all the conversations can lead us ,too.:)

Re: The Limit of realism in game.

If that were to happen then eventually your every character would end up unable to even move.

Re: The Limit of realism in game.

I agree with Draken's first post, games can only get so real before they stop actually being fun.

Except for racing games, they can always use more realistic improvements. :P

Re: The Limit of realism in game.

If your limbs could be just cut off, then you would end up like the Black Knight from Monty Python's Holy Grail. Actually, that would be funny.

Come back you coward! I'll bite your kneecaps off! The black knight always prevails!

As said, racing games could use realism. Just as much as flightsimalutors and such...

Re: The Limit of realism in game.

Eh, I played a flight simulator once and crashed at least 10 times before i figured out how to fly it (I kept flipping over and crashing). Even then, too much realism can be tough, but pays off. The reason PM doesnt want too much in his game is because he wants the average person to be able to buy this game, play it, and be like "Oh...my...GOD!!!" Because, I mean, how many casual gamers do you know that play Microsoft Flight Simulator all the time?

If it was to hard I would give up, like I have LO. So, I hope it still is a little easy.

Re: The Limit of realism in game.

I dont give up when its hard, I give up when the game sucks and I cant enjoy it. Or its not challenging.
