The problem with Rep

Recently I have noticed people asking others to increase their reputation, as a sort of compensation for creating a topic or solving a relevant problem.

This is not what I think Rep should be for.
I think reputation should reflect the community's spontaneous appreciation of your post/topic/whatever.

I have on a side-note seen something that looks like Rep-Circles, a small number of posters repeatedly increasing each others rep. I'm not saying its right or wrong, but I'd like to highlight that there might be such behaviour.

What do we want Rep to symbolize?
A members potential ability to persuade others into giving rep, or a member contributing and being appreciated without having to ask for it?

I'm pretty sure that the weight of your 'repping' is relative to your own rep. So unless they get some of us veteran users to join in, it's gonna take ages for them to accumulate any major amount of rep.

Yeah and giving rep is your opinion whether you lik eit or not.. you might give them rep because they made you laugh (I do that all the time)

That's why I never give rep out to people who ask for it. EVER...I give rep to those who deserve it. Those who make me laugh, a post I all around agree with, or just because.

and if I remember correctly, a restriction was put on the amount of rep you could give. Don't know if it's still active. But that pretty much takes care of the rep-circle problem you're talking about.

I never bother giving rep to most people - only to those worthy enough of posting a good enough theory about Fable or it's characters, which might attract my attention. Or perhaps other kind of threads - but that's quite rare. Otherwise, no.

I can't think of any better way to find out for sure than to have someone take note of their current count, have you rep them, then compare the old count with the new count.

On that note, I've taken my count, so I'm ready when you are.

And I've gotten rep from people brand new to the site (which of course means no rep), does that mean that new people have the same rep hammer as people like §ephi and droded?

Yeah, and I knew Non-Staff members all had the same Rep Power!

Everyone besides the staff have the same rep power to stop boosters etc. I remember Angels being messed up before and was giving about 10,000 per click. :lol:
