Violin - Good Investment?

Violin - Good Investment?

I want to pick up the Violin, for three reasons.

1. I'd be able to join Orchestra at school, and learn more about sheet music, not just TAB for guitar. Then I could look fancy, looking at my sheet music.

2. It's another fretted instrument, and is somewhat similar to guitar, of which I've been playing for around two and three fourths or three years. My guitar instructor told me I'd be well suited to violin because I have *sniff* girly (small) hands and I can move 'em pretty fast.

3. It sounds pretty. I want to be able to play like this guy:

Well, the thread title now, would it be a good investment? I could practice both because they are pretty similar (I tried piano, but I can't get into it. I actually used to play, when I was like 6-9 but quit.), while building musical knowledge at school.

What are all of your guys' opinions?

absolutely worth it. understanding music would do wonders for guitar. if that's your goal then i would recommend taking the first music theory course available to you on top of violin.

i think you should get a cello. they are so beast

Cello and Bass music are written in Bass Clef, whereas Viola is written in Alto Clef and Violin is written in Treble Clef - along with guitar.

Personally I would suggest you learn guitar sheet music, because Violins and similar string instruments are not only fretless - making hand position comparisons difficult - but the string count is different, and they may be tuned differently as well - AFAIK Guitar is EADGBE and four-string instruments are just EADG.

But it's about what you want to do - keep in mind that the Violin uses a bow, where the Guitar does not.

Also, Violin may be written an octave higher on the Treble Clef than the Guitar - I've played Tuba since 6th grade, am in 9th now, and when I played Bass in jazz band, the music was an octave higher on the Bass Clef, Tuba being the low octave and Bass being the natural. So take that into consideration as well - I play Tuba in jazz band now as well instead of Bass because it was too difficult to be able to read different octaves.
