So, do you Americans actually wear shoes indoors (as Hollywood suggests)? Firis might be wearing some kind of sockslippers or whatever indoor footwear.

Some do some don't. It depends on the household really. I'd guess that more do than don't.

Yeah I got that Firis wasn't wearing outdoor shoes. In the movies, they sometimes even go to bed wearing shoes...

Wearing shoes indoors, dunno. Probably sometimes, sometimes not. But to bed? What?

I never wear shoes inside, its rude and gets dirt inside, its common-sense, oh wait, we're talknig about americans doing it.. then thats fine.

I thought it was an established fact that Americans all wore shoes indoors and covered their floors with shag carpeting so they could just tear it off and replace it as it got dirty. :troll:

After a hard day's work and you just want to immediately flop in bed, sure... any other reason would be absurd.

I only wear my shoes indoors if I'm visiting someone else's home (unless requested otherwise).

Isn't that... sorta rude?

Would I do that in Sweden, I'd get my arse kicked.

Here, we assume people's feet are cleaner than the shoes. But I guess that depends on the climate as well. I can understand the fungus part, whereas here, where there's a lot of mud throughout the year it's only logical to take off those muddy shoes before blazing in.

This is all very interesting, actually :P.

Over here, it often doesn't matter too much whether you keep your shoes on or off. Most often, if person X is a guest at person Y's house, person Y's already-learnt habit sets a temporary example for person X. More often than not, people take off their shoes, but mostly for comfort I think. Only partially for cleanliness. When it comes to that, the Netherlands is quite a nice place. Except for when it has been raining, that ruins any floor.

But it is somehow not rude to stomp about with your dirty shoes on their clean floor, John?

Madness!

I almost always take my shoes off indoors, but I don't wear those outside, so they don't get dirty, plus I was showing them off that night. In a normal situation, unless I know that we are heading back out soon.

As far as people I know, unless they are cold or wearing slippers, they take their shoes off indoors. For example: I had white Reeboks with me too that I wore on my drive up, I left them at the door.

EDIT: I've never had a host tell me to take my shoes off either, it's just sort of depends on preference over here.
