Over here, it often doesn't matter too much whether you keep your shoes on or off. Most often, if person X is a guest at person Y's house, person Y's already-learnt habit sets a temporary example for person X. More often than not, people take off their shoes, but mostly for comfort I think. Only partially for cleanliness. When it comes to that, the Netherlands is quite a nice place. Except for when it has been raining, that ruins any floor.
