  • TBH I'm not really sure what you mean by sweep picking.

I use Dunlop Formula No. 65 for the whole guitar. And also my harp, when it looks a bit mangled.
FACE and Ever Green Boy Dies Fast or whatever you want is for reading proper stave music, which you don't really need unless you want to get right into the whole music thing.

There are 12 different notes you can play: C, C#/Db, D, D#/Eb, E, F, F#/Gb, G, G#/Ab, A, A#/Bb and B. Each note is one semitone (which is equal to one fret) away from the notes either side of it. One tone is two semitones. # means "sharp" which means that it's a semitone higher and b is flat, which means a semitone lower. Therefore an F# for instance would be the same as Gb.

The strings are (from deepest to highest) are E, A, D, G, B, and e. So fret two on the E string would be an F#/Gb.

    I hope that helped.
Well, every song is in a certain key, which is a certain set of notes that sound well with each other. You might have noticed that if you play a "wrong" note, it doesn't fit in with the melody of the song, and it sounds off. That is because that note does not belong in whatever key the song is in.

Say with E minor (sorry, but it's my favourite key) The notes are E, F#, G, A, B, C and D (and back to E again). If you play a note that's not any of those seven notes, then it's not in key.

Ironically, if you play a note that's out of key intentionally, it's called an accidental.

I hope you understood that :S
If you want to get more advanced, then I personally prefer this scale:

    -------------------------------------------------------10--12--
    -----------------------------------------8--10--12------------
    ----------------------------------7--9--------------------------
    -----------------------5--7--9---------------------------------
    ----------------5--7-------------------------------------------
    --0--3--5--7--------------------------------------------------

You can adapt those scales into any key by just moving it up or down the fretboard.

    I hope that helped :S
Well then learn scales, definitely. It's important to know which note to end a phrase (a short section of music) on. For a song in a blues (which is most popular music) key it's usually the sixth (or the fourth if your playing in pentatonic. Fifth if it's blues). That probably didn't make any sense, but I'll show you.

For example, if you want to play AC/DC, he mostly uses the blues scale in e minor. That's this scale.

    ---------------------------------------------------10--(12)--
    -----------------------------------------10--12--------------
    --------------------------------(9)--12-----------------------
    -----------------------9--12----------------------------------
    ------------10--12-------------------------------------------
    --10--(12)---------------------------------------------------

The notes in brackets are the ones that are the "root" of the scale (the e). It's not actually the blues scale, but it's pretty close.
It's hard to give specific tips. You just have to practice it. Download some generic backing tracks and just solo over them. Or you could just solo over songs you already have, but I find that less creative.
Well I'm not exactly an expert on the technique, but I'll try.

It's sorta like you're slowly playing a chord (one note at a time), but faster. It's also very much a wrist technique. I sort of roll mine around.

I'm not sure if the same thing applies to metal picking. I'm thinking more your spanish guitar style, but I'm pretty sure that's not what you're after.
I can't really join it because I'm going on vacation again on Sunday. Then I'm going away with my boyfriend for Labor day so I'll be gone for another 4 days then. xP
I was looking at the Comic toury thread though and there's a lot of good characters, I wish I could join. It looks like so much fun.
Guitar, games and friends sounds like a really good vacation actually. ^^ I'm looking forward to going back to college, I miss a lot of my friends I never get to see.
Hey hey! Nothing's really going on around here until next week. I'm not even bothering to unpack from my trip because I'm just going away again in a few days.
    How are you doing?
    H
Because it's full of fags, the staff don't do their jobs, and the discussions aren't as good any more.
Is Modern Warfare going to be an 18+ game? Is that classed as an "M for Mature" over there? Yikes!
"You really are just one of those rich little kids who gets whatever they want, are you?"

    Awesome. Just awesome. Because awesome.
Lol, I wish. I've got a crappy Peavey, and an all in one footswitch. I've got three guitars: one Epiphone, one Squier and a Takamine (acoustic). It's not bad though.

    What do you have again?
