I'm a highly conservative Bond fan.

I hate these new Bond flicks.

Feels like the charming/cheeky/funny feel of the older films have been reduced to generic action.

Plus.. Daniel Craig? Really?

I thought it was one of the best Bond films ever made.
The opening sequence was the best one in the entire history of Bond films.
Overall top 3 material.

Who else has seen it?

Agreed on both counts. I enjoyed the twists in the story, and I thought Silva was actually quite well written and complex for a villain. The opening song was great as well, Adele has the perfect voice for Bond Songs.

That's over generalising a bit, don't you think? Licence to Kill was pretty dark, and The Connery films were more grounded than the more recent films. And Skyfall has some light hearted parts in it too. It'd be nice to say Old ones were the best and new ones sucked, but all the films have their pros and cons. I think the Roger Moore films strayed too far from the books in tone and story, which is why the craig and dalton films are my favourites.

By the way, has anybody read the books? I'm reading Casino Royale, and I'm enjoying it so far.

I'm not talking about "dark".

I'm talking about them degenerating into generic action flicks.

I thought it was incredible, very good film, much better than Quantum Of Solace.

Daniel Craig? Really?

You know, Daniel Craig is actually more similar to the description of Bond in the original books? Originally, he was an arsehole, who went around torturing people and stuff.

Who cares about the books, honestly? I don't care if it is closer to the source material, it aint "the" Bond I grew up with anyway.

If you had asked me a week ago, I would have said:
1. Brosnan - Grew up with him. Can't replace that, right?
2. Connery
3. Craig
4. Moore
5. Dalton

That's despite the fact that I loved Casino Royale. I don't know. Something about this one was just right in every way.

The camera work. The casting. The script. It was just... dare I say perfect? If you pay attention to how the camera works when they are walking around the Chinese casino you can see that there was some real mastery and care put into it.
James Bond hasn't really been at the forefront of the art of cinema... ever, really. It's always been about style and spectacle, but this one was different.

Funny that a Daniel Craig bond movie would wind up being the artsiest of all. Did anyone else catch on to the whole "old vs new, can Bond stay fresh after 50 years?" commentary they had going throughout the movie? I loved how they nodded to the old school bond films by using the car and waiting until after the movie to show the classic scoped shot before flashing the "50th anniversary" thing. I can't say they're ruining Bond when so much of the movie was spent paying homage to the earlier films.

They're not ruining Bond, it just isn't my Bond anymore. Moonraker is my favourite Bond movie, followec by The Spy That Loved Me. That should give you some indication of what "my Bond" is. I'd say "my Bond" ended with Goldeneye. Didn't really care for the other Brosnan flicks that followed, but I loved Goldeneye. The tank scene is one of my top Bond moments.

Havent seen it yet but I want to as it looks superb. I can see what Tsuyu is saying about it not being the Bond we grew up with as the whole style & character is different but I like the movies and their more serious, dark, and violent tone. I first thought Daniel Craig was an odd choice for Bond but mainly because again he isnt what we are used to but I think hes done a superb job with what he has been given. Hes more of a violent, cold Bond than we have ever seen and his movies excitement levels and adrenaline packed scenes have been brilliant.

Which is what people said about Licence to Kill, but that didn't nessecarily make it true. And the Licence to Kill remark was about how the all older bond films weren't all charming and funny, not that you don't like it getting darker in content. But you're entitled to your own opinion. I personally prefer the Craig films, because I like a Bond that is closer to the books.

What I find really weird is that when they originally started making these bond films, they were supposed to be prequels. Now I can't tell if they're sequels to the rest of the series, or just a reboot all together.

If it is the former, we got some wicked time travel **** going on here. I bet M is a Time Lady.

I liked it as a film, but like some others have said it just doesn't feel like 'my kind' of Bond, the ones I grew up watching...hard to explain.

I don't understand. Of course it doesn't feel like the bond you grew up watching. James bond has morphed multiple times since even 5 years ago. It simply isn't the same bond you grew up watching. It's new technology. It's a different director. It's a different actor playing James Bond. It's made to cater to a different generation. But that's exactly it: it will always be James Bond, right?
If we didn't agree on that, we wouldn't have seen all of them nor would we have gone out to see the newest installment.

Are you saying that anything 007 that isn't the same as your childhood is inherently inferior?

OR are you saying that you can't judge it as a bond film, because it's simply too different?

They are inferior because they lack the wit and charm, yes. They feel like generic action flicks with a character named Bond, not Bond.

Wow. Awesome, awesome thread. Very few people know that I'm a huge Bond guy. I don't hide it, it just never comes up in conversation.

I have not seen Skyfall. Yet. But I will. I was disappointed by the last couple films. I didn't think Craig had what it took to be a Bond. Maybe that'll turn around, I'm hoping so. But I was more disappointed by the dismantling of franchise traditions. No Q. Or R even. No martini, shaken, not stirred. No Moneypenny. Product placement like whoa, which was a thing in Brosnan's last few Bond films but these newer ones have redefined extreme with how they do this. The past traditions are mocked even, "you're the money" "worth every penny", rageragerage. But then I heard Q is coming back, and Bond is getting his signature weapon back too. And cheez promises it's da shizzle. So definitely something for me to check out.

Side note, Brosnan forreals #1. After that I'd go with Dalton. To me, Dalton was the first realistic sort of Bond, he would get his butt kicked, a lot. Roger Moore could fight a ten fem fatale ninjas while sipping on sake commenting on how it's the correct temperature. Sean Connery could smoke three bullet cigarettes at the same time and kill four people with them. And... I don't think anyone liked Lazenby. He was so bad they brought back Connery. Just not my cup of tea. I like to see my heroes get beaten to hell, otherwise I'll just go watch Superman throw everything bad into the sun.

Lazenby was dead-set on only playing Bond once from the get-go. It wasn't because he was "bad" in the role that they went with another actor in the next movie. I wonder why; all the other Bonds have gained fame and fortune because of their many stints as Bond after all. When was the last time anyone heard about Lazenby..?

In which case, the Bond you grew up with is the 'wrong' Bond. Daniel Craig might not be what you're used to, but think about it, does that actually make it bad? As Cheez pointed out, throughout the film, several nods were made to the old Bond films. Having seen a bunch of them, I'd say they're doing a good job of keeping them relevant for nowadays but still qualifying them as Bond films.

Fun fact, there's rumors going around that this song from the new Muse album was a Skyfall intro song that never made it.
If you watch the video and listen at 1:15, you can hear some definite bond from the orchestra. Like, couldn't be anything else. Trademark bond. I'm not saying it's impossible to write a song with these specific notes without it being for a 007 flick any more. I'm saying you can't put them in so deliberately in a motif-like fashion without people noticing.
